Other than the Sudan chapter in Lonely Planet's Africa guide this is the only Sudan guidebook available. Lots of details on history, preparation, paperwork and the like, but it does miss out a lot of details (hotels, restaurants, car hire etc.) and gives pretty much no info on south Sudan.
Additionally a lot has changed since this book was researched (2004/2005) many more roads in the north are now paved, and prices have increased considerably (in hard currency terms). If you are heading to Sudan however it is still worth buying, but also look for information on the internet to fill in the gaps in this guide.

I went to Burkina Faso this summer and would have been lost without this book! It's a fantastic guide book, and although the first in English is definitely better than any of the French guide books I had on the country. It was in-depth and gave lots of useful advice.

I really would not go to BF without it, it made the whole trip that much more worthwhile.

It sounds rather gushing, but this really is the best book out there for Burkina.

I just hope that those using it in BF have as an enriching trip as I did.

This book is a strange concept in that you can sit in your armchair and read the anecdotes about batty vicars and loopy aristocrats and roar with laughter, or use it as a tourist guide. It has a fabulous and most thorough section on the unbelievable pursuits the British get up to - gurning championhips (that's making revoltingly ugly faces) black pudding throwing world championships (the account of this had me giggling), world pea-shooting championships, garlic festival. We went there and tried the garlic ice cream. Yeach! What is true is that you can get to a lifetime's worth of fascinating places where you will find no tourists, no buses, no admission charges, no car park charges, no gift shop. - just really really interesting places. ... I have lived in Nigeria now for over seven years and I met Lizzie when she came to Lagos to write the book. Within the space of a few weeks, Lizzie has come to understand Nigeria and the Nigerian people in a way that many long term residents have not. Time and time again I found myself recognising places and situations exactly as I had experienced them. She writes with great empathy for her subject and tells it as it is, the good and the bad. I showed it to a couple of my Nigerian friends and they loved it, agreeing with almost all Lizzie had to say. This book is quite simply a must for anyone living in or visiting Nigeria, as well as being a cracking good read.
