The action starts on the very first page with the sinking of an Atlantic liner and from there we are led, via Casablanca, to the martialling yards of a German controlled railway terminus, para drops, return to UK by MTB, SOE training, para drop back into France the evening before D Day. Hardly a moment's rest!
Well controlled writing then covers the killing of the local Gestapo Colonel to the largest fixed battle ever undertaken by the French Resistance followed by an intensive period of escape and evasion.
Compelling actions and compelling writing from the very first page makes this reviewer wonder if others have openend the book. Or, if so, they have another agenda behind their reviews of what Professor MRD Foot has described ... Read More:

down. We always go for Rough Guides, finding them to be the best
written travel books on the market, with a good balance of practical
details and background information, and this one is one of the best we
have used. Am loving the new colour sections, too.

Aubrey Burl's previous works were showing a wee bit of dating. As carbon dating become more accurate, you are seeing these ancient rings grow older in age instead of younger as they anticipated. While Burl's previous works were amazing, this long awaited "update" of this information, as well as addition information on more recent excavations make this is must. Yes, it's expensive. But it's worth every penny. There are new insight in the the purpose of the rings of stone, a new interpretation of Calanais (sorry, as a Scot I refuse to call it Callanish!) and Stonehenge

The beautiful book is loaded with hundreds of photos, explores the ancestry, methods of construction and why they were abandoned after thousands of years of use.

For our first visit to Brittany this was an excellent guide; the amount of information is sufficient without being overwhelming, the writer's style is clear and informative, the map-based "day out" structure makes it very easy to visualise the options available in any particular area, and his identification of some of the more obscure, but nevertheless fascinating, places to visit (alas we didn't make it to the living bee and the city of ants at Kercadoret, but the guided walks to the mussel and oyster beds from Le Vivier sur Mer were fascinating), provided the sort of variety necessary for children (and adults!) to avoid being overloaded with beaches and medieval towns.
