I already live in France but I still read books which describe the experience. This is one of the best I have read. It is accurate on most counts but more importantly it is written by someone who actually has experience of living in this country ( whereas many relocation books are written to a formula by authors who have very little direct knowledge of the country about which they are writing!). It is not meant to be an encyclopaedia but the information it provides is very valuable and I would have loved to read it before I moved here. It is also so readable and the valuable information is there alongside the personal experiences of the author some of which are very humorous. Before buying this book you need to ask yourself just one question. What are my language goals? If you want to pass a GSCE exam or have something to use for reference on holiday, then you can buy a much cheaper, smaller and lighter dictionary that will do the trick just fine. However, if you want to be an advanced Spanish learner, then you'll need a substantial dictionary, and this is the best I've come across, having tried several previous dictionaries of varying sizes.

One problem I have had in the past with dictionaries is the lack of words. This has over 300,000 words and thus realistically covers all the words that even an advanced learner would ever need. Also, there are interesting pages about SMS abbreviations in Spanish and ... Read More:

I've used the Dummies Guides before, notably in computing (which I've taught). I have a good ear for languages and speak French which is good enough to have native speakers of that language ask which part of the country I come from. However, I found this a really old-fashioned approach. Fun??! When you spend the first 58 pages (it's described as "Fun and Games") learning basic grammar? Sorry, but it's not for me.

This introduction to Greek is a gem of a short course which lives up to the claim on the cover: "The ideal course for absolute beginners." It consists of a 128 page book and two cds. The cds are well integrated with the book and the course moves smoothly from one to the other (don't even think about getting the book only - the cds are an integral part of the course and add immeasurably to it). There are lots of short spoken exercises which help with learning and build confidence in speaking. The best way of using the course is carefully explained in the introduction and the page layouts are outstanding - very clear, all the Greek is highlighted and it is very easy to follow. I am having trouble understanding the other reviews on this book and CD, as I found this book unbelievably contrived, with too much talking. There is a french lady who introduces each song, which totally spoils the flow, especially as she has a really fake syrupy way of speaking which is very grating.

I was so annoyed with the CD, I actually threw it away so my children (and others) would never be subjected to listening to it. I never do things like that normally, but I felt very passionately about this! If kids are bored and turned off to French early on, it may be hard work geting them interested again later on, by which time the damage has already been done.

I love this package!!! It is the nearest you'll get to an evening class in Spanish.

It does take a bit of time to work out how the course will best suit you but that is the beauty of it - you do what works for you. A previous reviewer missed the point about the accompanying CD - that is an extra to the course and is just a dialogue which you can follow in the book. It isn't intended as a 'learn as you go along'.

The best thing about this package for me is that you can practise speaking and listening back to yourself speaking spanish. In most courses you can practise phrases but only in your head.
