I am a final year university student and i use this book regularly when preparing oral presentations and compositions, as well as to find phrases to impress the examiners. It's very useful when you have an idea but you don't know exactly how to express it - the sections are clearly organised into themes. Buy it if you're fed up of using the same old sentence constructions and want to make your written and spoken spanish more sophisticated.

I am enjoying this book and finding it very helpful, but think it would be pretty scary for a complete beginner to start with. Often the reader is required to give opposites of words which are not in the text being studied, and often there are words which need to be understood in order to answer the questions, but there is no translation given. I think this is frustrating for the reader. Surely the point of a graded reader is that the student doesn't have to keep reaching for a dictionary, thus breaking the flow of the reading and learning? I am managing by ignoring the words I don't know in order to keep the flow going, as I imagine I'll pick them up at some other stage along the way. When I first started studying Latin I made the foolish error of buying the Collins Latin Dictionary. Having been bitterly disappointed with it from the very beginning, I decided I'd do well to buy the Oxford equivalent. This is worlds superior in every way. It is, of course, limited by the fact that it is a 'pocket' volume (I would imagine that a colossal home version would be able to offer a great deal more), but for general use it is very generous indeed. In fact, I will be generous myself and assert that it is a great deal more concise and reliable than many pocket editions of dictionaries that I have had occasion to use. A generally well organised primer for those planning to take French to a serious level. The book is well laid out and the explainations are for the most part very clear.

There are one or two errors in the book (for example in the list of impersonal clauses that take the subjunctive - I hasten to add that my native French speaking teacher identified these, not me), but not significant enough to devalue it. The cross referencing is a little patchy in places and some of the exercises on the dry side, but then since when was grammar supposed to be fun!

The section on verb usage is mostly excellent but the section on pronouns would benefit from expansion and clearer examples. Overall though, a very good buy.

This is a wonderful language pack with everything you need to help beginning children learn French. The animation is engaging and captures the children's attention. They are learning without even realising it, thinking they are just watching a DVD. Not only do you get the wonderful Serge DVD, you also get an Audio CD, songsheets, game cards and an Activity Book.

I can't recommend this highly enough. If I could give it more stars I would!

This is a wonderful language pack with everything you need to help beginning children learn French. The animation is engaging and captures the children's attention. This book has a lot of useful exercises to do at home between classes to practise all the new grammar that's been introduced in the different chapters. It also has a key to all the exercises so you can check them yourself.

A word of warning though. The instructions aren't always very clear, particularly not to beginners, so you might need a teacher to explain them to you. There are also no explanations so it's not always easy to see what you've done wrong and why it's wrong. Furthermore, there's a lot of typos, both in the main part of the book and in the answer section so don't always accept something as wrong, do ask your teacher if you think it's supposed to be right.

This book is brilliant. As a home edeucator and having muddled through teaching my daughter French to GCSE level with a mix of inadequate books I was DELIGHTED to find this one for Spanish. We used it to take both of us from nothing to GCSE Spanish level in four months. It has EVERYTHING you need as well as a brilliant grammar section at the end - I am not keen on the current structureless way of learning languages. The only extra thing you need to do apart from going through this book systematically (out loud), is to download the past papers and mark schemes from AQA, if that is your board,and to get something for the accent - we used an old Collins Spanish (South American)Phrase book - and away you go.
