In my humble opinion I think some of the other reviewers are being a little harsh and somewhat missing the point.

Yes, the book is short, almost a novella. But why is this such a bad thing? It is the length it is because that's how long it takes Mr Palahniuk to tell the story and he's not a man to waste words.

To read it in one sitting probably means missing much of the subtlety. I took my time, savouring his mastery of unsavoury scenes and re-reading the tight dialogue and vivid descriptions.

As usual his background research includes obscure facts on a given theme, this time centred on the pain Hollywood's lure can inflict on those who seek the immortality it offers.

What a fantastic read! Rachel, the main character, became endearing and I started to hope for the best outcome for her. It had me laughing and crying, sometimes simultaneously! I'm really looking forward to reading more work from this author.

It took just over 24 hours for me to read this brilliant book from start to finish. I've already ordered Shopaholic & Baby, and can't wait to receive it and start devouring that one too!

Back to this book: it has everything, laughter, tears, arguments and plenty of drama!

Can't recommend highly enough!

They say you should never judge a book by its cover and that is certainly confirmed with this offering! I judged the book by its cover, bought it at London Heathrow, and began to read on the long haul transatlantic flight to LA. Things started well, it seemed a great idea for a story - the long lost book with a sinister magical secret but things were unraffling by the time we reached Iceland. Ploughing on through the author's efforts to show how clever she is I gave up as we crossed the eastern USA coast. And that was that really. The storyline of this book is 'all at sea' - and that's exactly where I left it. I first read this book as a teenager but remembered how, even then, I had appreciated the writing. And it was just as magical the second time around.
'Rebecca' is the tale of Maxim de Winter, his first wife Rebecca, his nameless second wife (and this is really intriguing - why DDM chose not to name her heroine is poignant in the extreme..) and Manderley - the house in which the tale is set. Narrated by the second wife and beginning at the end (a style I love anyway), we are led by the hand into the controlling World of Maxim and with a 'wing' to house each wife and the formidable housekeeper Mrs Danvers, you can see that such a fruitful cast of characters will make for great reading.

This book really is one of the funniest reads I have come across. Becky Bloomwoods character is extremely likeable and the story just pulls you in from the beginning. As a fellow spender, I could totally relate to some of the situations she gets herself in to! On the whole, a brilliant original girly book and I recommend it to everyone!

I heard an interesting review on the radio for this book and thought I would give it a go. I was hooked from about page one. It isn't a story about surfing it is a story about risk, challenge and how life changes the people we are. A totally amazing read. I could not put it down.

I don't know if this comedy (I use the term loosely) made it on to one of Richard & Judy's book lists but it is exactly the kind of vaccuous, trite, middle-class nonesense that I'd expect them to choose - on a par with A Starter For Ten which was equally underwhelming. I can almost picture the gruesome twosome rolling around on the sofa at the sheer side-splitting hilarity of it - except that, like "Starter", it's neither funny nor entertaining. It would, however, be perfect for one of those dreary comedy serials so favoured by BBC2 and Channel Four that usually feature Rob Brydon.

The characters are, at best, irritating. The "will they, won't they (get married)" plotline would only be interesting if I actually gave a damn. Frankly, my dear, I didn't.

Another good read, possibly even better than Crow Lake. Jake has to be one of the most evil and unpleasant characters ever written! I wanted to reach into the book and slap him! A very compelling read, very evocatively written and highly recommended.
