. 44 Scotland Street
City Travel Guides > Books > By Period
by: Alexander McCall Smith
August 11, 2005
More and more I find that the hype for films and books way, way exceed the actual product - and this book is yet another example of this.
Admittedly some sections were entertaining but, on the whole, the writing is dreary and concentrates on a bunch of self-absorbed people. Perhaps a matter of personal taste. I found the characters annoying and trite - a narcissistic former tenant of 44 Scotland Street, daddy's little rich girl, a feeble art gallery owner etc etc. The most interesting character is probably Cyril the dog. Probably would have been more interesting if Cyril had contracted rabies and bitten them all.
My personal opinion and I doubt I will be reading another McCall Smith book.

. Tears of the Giraffe (No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency)
City Travel Guides > Books > By Period
by: Alexander McCall Smith
August 07, 2003
This is the second book in the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency Series, and begins as the first book finishes. Unlike other sequels there is no intervening period, which will therefore need explaining throughout the book, just in case you did not read the first.
You need to read the first, to understand the characters of Mma Ramotswe, Mr J L B Maketoni and Mma Makutsi and the relationships they have between them. Along with beautiful setting of Botswana. The descriptions of the area and places further a field are still rich and colourful, giving a true sense of the place.
There are many storylines running concurrently through the book; the engagement of Mma Ramotswe and Mr J L B Maketoni which everyone is talking about, and how they are a suited ... Read More:

. The Secret Life of a Slummy Mummy
City Travel Guides > Books > By Period
by: Fiona Neill
January 31, 2008
I began reading this book with an open mind - I read all sorts of fiction and whereas I wouldn't have picked this out myself (it was nominated at my book club) I thought it might be a fairly amusing summer read. However, as the characters are revealed and the plot develops, Neil presents you with a portfolio of stereotyped, unappealing characters getting up to nothing of any real significance. I'm tired of reading about North Londoners working in 'The Media' and women who constantly worry about their weight yet portray thin women as uptight neurotics. It would be inspiring one day to read about a woman aged over 30, who's healthy, focussed, and successful ...a real heroine.

. Kafka on the Shore
City Travel Guides > Books > By Period
by: Haruki Murakami
October 06, 2005
"Kafka on the Shore" richly deserves its praise by The New York Times as one of its most notable books of fiction in 2005. On a more personal note, I regard it as the most compelling new work of fiction I have read this year, and substantially more absorbing a read than the novel which I regard now as a distant Number Two, Rick Moody's "The Diviners". But I do wonder whether it is truly one of Haruki Murakami's masterpieces; of these both "Norwegian Wood" and "The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles" are genuine literary classics of modern world literature. In stark contrast, I agree with a previous Amazon reviewer that the Kafka Tamura saga - one of the two intertwined plots - is reminiscent of "Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World". And yet here, unlike in the earlier novel, ... Read More:
