The Lonely Planet city guide to "Melbourne" was put together by Simone Egger and David McClymont. The guide I am reviewing is the 5th edition of the guide, so please take note that a 6th edition has been released, and it is almost always best to go with the latest edition of a travel guide.

I may update my review after my trip, but from my first reading of the guide, I found it to be fairly comprehensive. It covers the city as well as some things to do in the immediately surrounding region. There are sections which cover the culture (`City Life', `Arts',' Food', `History'), the area (`Neighbourhoods'), and most importantly for the traveler, things to do (`Eating', `Drinking', `Sleeping', `Walking Tours', `Entertainment', `Sports, ... Having recently located from one capital city (London) to another (Ottawa) I can thoroughly recommend this guide to anybody contemplating a similar move. So far (three weeks in Canada and counting) I have not found a topic that I needed advice on that this book could not answer. In fact, I have frequently found that I am perhaps better informed than some of the resident population! The book's style is open and engaging, and where differences between provinces exist they are outlined accurately and succinctly. My only, minor, criticism is that the indexing could be better, but not by much. If you combine this book with one of the better tourist guides I can't see that there would be much you aren't prepared for.

I used this book for touring around the southern half of this region. It really is a big area and found this book to be invaluable. There is a lot of info on trails and lots of gorgeous photos that really inspires you to get out there and see as much as you can. Also info on bears and what to do if you encounter one.
If you are a hiker: I'm of reasonable fitness and as a guide, the walk up Sulphur Mountain in Banff took me 1½ hrs, compared to the 2hrs the book estimates.
It is still worth visiting the Tourist Info offices in each town and getting updates on the latest conditions, but you don't need to get every leaflet going... save a tree! This book has as much info as most people need.
