. Explore the Inca Trail (Rucksack Readers)
City Travel Guides > Books > Central and South America
by: Jacquetta Megarry, Roy Davies
August 22, 2006
Explore the Inca Trail is a guide detailing two interconnected long distance walking trails (the Mollepata Trail and the Classic Trail) leading to Machu Picchu. This guide is set out so that walkers may join these trails at various stops along the usual train route. This aspect of the book enables participants to walk the trail and still adhere to their time and ability requirements.
The Inca Civilization was an advanced civilization that thrived in what is now modern Peru until it was conquered by the Spaniards in the late 1500s. This amazing civilization was responsible for some of the most amazing sculptures, textiles, metalwork, and architecture that the world has ever seen.
Machu Picchu is the remnants of a breathtaking ... Read More:

. Antigua and Barbuda (Landmark Visitors Guide)

I won't go into much detail of how this book is written neither give this book moral evaluation like some people here do in their reviews. Especially the guy who gave it 1 star accusing Ms Jolie of doing little. Disgusted as that man probably wrote his wrote whilst seated at a comfy desk himself. Anyway, I personally enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it to my friends. Below is a brief list of pos/neg sides of it.
Positive:
- it gives you insight into the places most media have lost interest in, draws a vivid picture of places she visits in your own mind;
- you get to know Angelina better. And she doesn't disappoint you with her willingness to understand, help, her open mind and endless compassion;
- easy to read (well ... Read More:

. The Rough Guide to Guatemala - Edition 3
City Travel Guides > Books > Central and South America
by: Iain Stewart
January 26, 2006
This guide proved to be a very useful companion during our trip to Guatemala in August 2006, and was very strong on hotels (we found some amazing places around lake Atitlan)and eating options.The maps were great and bus and shuttle connections useful and generally accurate. Check out the photo section for a good introduction to Guatemala - a wonderful country, allowing us to pick and choose from the highlights suggested.
Tikal was very well covered, with tons of historical info. In fact that is the real strength of this guide - very complete coverage of Guatemala's Maya sites.

. The Cloud Garden: A True Story of Adventure, Survival, and Extreme Horticulture
City Travel Guides > Books > Central and South America
by: Tom Hart Dyke, Paul Winder
February 02, 2004
And now for something completely different.
Tom Hart Dyke, (the plant nut), and Paul Winder, (the climbing nut), tell the harrowing story of their capture in the Darien Gap.
"Don't go there" they are told again, and again, and again. Do they listen! Of course they didn't, if they had, they would not have been able to write this book.
With each young man giving their own accounts of their experiences throughout, they take us on a daunting journey. The story starts as a tale of their meeting. The colourful and detailed scenes give the reader (if they have an imagination) a real feel for the surroundings. The graphic details of the camps, the sights and smells, give the reader all that is needed to be dragged into the jungle with ... Read More:

. The Linger Loco!: In Search of the Real Carnival (Argentina, Chile, Peru, Brazil)
City Travel Guides > Books > Central and South America
by: Simon Raven, Chris Raven
October 30, 2007
This third book by the Raven brothers is absolutely brilliant. Unlike any other travel book you are likely to read, the Linger Loco is tear-wateringly funny, candid and insightful. This book is reminiscent of the travels of Ewan Mcgregor and Charley Boorman, yet so much more genuine; these guys have no support crew of employees sorting their visas, arranging accomodation, providing medical care or streamlining the trip. And their enthusiasm for their unsscripted, itinerary-free adventure is really refreshing, compared with the bratty outbursts of McGregor and Boorman. I would really recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the Long Way Down' genre, but wants a more down to earth, humour-filled read.
