This book aims to give a view of Buenos Aires which really sells it short. Focussing only on the frantic, hectic, all night long, young, super cool, flashy and utterly shallow aspects of the city. If you're very young and you only travel so you can always feel like you're in a disco in Ibiza, buy it. If you want some alternative insight into a fascinating, scruffy, historic, genteel, polite, beautiful and occasionally savage city, ignore most of its breathless attempts and try another one.

I found used this book in Rio, Bahia, the Amazon and Recife. It was great.

It is aimed at travelers who want abundant, accurate information. It is not an illustrated guide with lots of diagrams and pictures. But it has far more info than all the others - the small print and page count mean that there's just much more there. And the pics at the front give a good idea of the highlights.

I also really liked the background essays on music, festivals and general culture and the boxes - loads of really interesting quirky facts and great tips.

It is very rare to find such an outstanding mix between travel writing and a full review of a nations historical developments. The book is both captivating and entertaining and gives amazing insights into the roots of a very special society. Thoroughly recommendable!

A book which really does seem to meet the authors obligation to write it.
It starts well and the plan of riding around SOuth America in Darwins footsteps could indeed have been a great travel story, the ups and downs of the first part of the journey are quite interesting, and the authors humbling in Patagonia was very insightful, and one of the best accounts of the real stark beauty of the desolate plains, certainly i prefer this books depiction to Bruce Chatwins in Patagonia.
Unfortunately it just heads continuously downhill, as disastor follows disastor, which would sound like great material except the book gets less and less involving, its a real struggle to stay interested, initially the comparisons with Darwins writings and findings ... Read More:
