. The Rough Guide to Peru (Rough Guide Travel Guides)
City Travel Guides > Books > Central and South America
by: Dilwyn Jenkins
September 28, 2006
I carried both this Rough Guide and the Footprint guide with me on a recent trip to Peru. In comparison, I found that the Rough Guide contained lots of annoying small editorial errors, e.g. a map printed the wrong way up, and was also often factually a bit out of date. However, the descriptions of the sights are covered in much more detail, as is the background info to Peru. It seems to me that the Rough Guide editors have done their homework on Peru, but perhaps not so much "fieldwork", meaning they don't seem to have checked the facts on the ground very thoroughly.
In the end I found it useful to have both guides: the Footprint for accurate travel info and the Rough Guide for more detailed descriptions of the sights.

. Bandit Roads: Into the Lawless Heart of Mexico
City Travel Guides > Books > Central and South America
by: Richard Grant
June 05, 2008
There is one chapter in Bandit Roads( actually it's split over two chapters book ending the narrative) that is as tense, compelling and exciting as anything you will read in a thriller. This is mainly because it's the type of scenario you might read in a thriller except this actually happened. Even the fact that the reader knows the outcome doesn't lessen it's impact . I will not elucidate further (even though the books jacket and no doubt corresponding promotional blurb will do so) for fear of giving too many details away . The rest of the book , not too surprisingly ,struggles to match the beginning and conclusions visceral thrills yet despite this Bandit Roads is an engaging and educational read.
Richard Grant acknowledges that he is ... Read More:

. My Father's Island: A Galapagos Quest (Pelican Press): A Galapagos Quest
City Travel Guides > Books > Central and South America
by: Johanna Angermeyer
January 01, 2007
The author never knew her father, Hans Angermeyer, nor was she familiar with the circumstances of his last years or death. He was one of five brothers who left Nazi Germany in 1935, sailing to the Galapagos Islands to make a new home. In Ecuador, he married an American widow, Emmasha, who had a small son. They had one child and another on the way when war came. Emmasha and the children returned to the U.S.; Hans, a German national, was denied admittance. When the author was 13, the family returned to Ecuador and to the Galapagos for a meeting with relatives. Living on the island--even without amenities and with its perils--was paradise. Angermeyer learned to hunt, fish and enjoy a Robinson Crusoe-like existence. She gives an engaging account of ... Read More:
