. Driving Over Lemons: An Optimist in Andalucia
City Travel Guides > Books > Countries and Regions
by: Chris Stewart
June 03, 1999
This book is so well written and witty, describing an idylic life in Spain that I am sure many will be tempted to follow in Chris's and my own footsteps. I have been through the same story as this family, having lived in Spain for the past sixteen years, longer than Chris. I speak fluent Castellano, the same as him. My warning about his book is unless you can speak Spanish perfectly, you will never enjoy half the experiences described. If you are willing to learn the language, then "Driving Over Lemmons" is so good and an inspiration. If you are inspired and are up for it then Spain is still a good choice. My advice is read the book, learn to speak Spanish, enjoy and do the same. Wonderful read and a wonderful country. I am writting this ... Read More:

. Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Countries and Regions
by: Simon Richmond

As travel guides go, this one combines three very different places... first there's Singapore with its very modern outlook. Then there's Malaysia bridging the vibrant outlook of Kuala Lumpur with the colonial history of Georgetown. Finally there's Brunei which is a whole lot more laid back.
In terms of contents, there's the usual details of history, etiquette, sights etc. There's also the usual combination of excellent maps with only the occassional mistake where a particular landmark has been put on the wrong side of the road. Restaurant and accomodation advice are as usual mixed (many are gone by the time you visit) but it certainly provides good ideas if you are struggling to find somewhere, and also tells you the general area to find ... . Paris (Eyewitness Travel Guides)
City Travel Guides > Books > Countries and Regions

If time is tight, or you just like to arrive at a holiday destination very well prepared, a guidebook is a valuable and important investment. So choosing the right one is crucial.
Whilst I suspect that "Time Out" and "Lonely Planet" books probably sell in greater volume, having looked through them both I'm extremely glad I opted instead to use this Eyewitness Travel Guide for my recent trip to Paris. It helped me make the most of my trip.
As with most guidebooks this breaks down Paris into a series of districts - but then very clearly labels the key attractions, how to find them and even proposes short walks that will enable you to get the most out of your time in that area.
Accepting that flicking between pages as you ... Read More:

. Cuba (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Countries and Regions
by: Brendan Sainsbury
November 01, 2006
For my first trip to Cuba, this book was pretty accurate, up to date and informative in terms of places to visit, tourist attractions, what to do and where to go. It gives you useful advice on how much you are expected to tip, what to expect of the country and how to get around and where to go which was very useful. The only negative aspect of this book was probably the design layout. It covers a vast majority of aspects of Cuba which can be a lot to get through, the layout is quite difficult to read and its mostly black and white columns of writing do not make it appealing. As it is written from first hand experience it is definitely a very useful book for first time traveller's however a lot of the entertainment they had suggested for Havana, no one had heard of when ... . The Vendee
City Travel Guides > Books > Countries and Regions
by: Angela Bird
May 25, 2004
Following a trawl of the internet sites before our trip to the Vendee i came across Angela Bird's Vendee site and the reccommended book. I purchased it and it was integral to us having a fantasic holiday. Knowing when markets were on, the better less developed areas of the Marshes to visit etc. It was our bible for the holiday and i can highly reccommend it.
