As a Scot, living in Scotland, this is the one guide book that I refer to again and again. When holidaying in Scotland, we plan whole days around this book. We'll plan a scenic route to see a waterfall or a good walk with the dog. We'll work out what eaterie we're going to have lunch in, and invariably, we'll be staying in a hotel, B&B or guest house recommended by this guide and have a pint in one of its suggested pubs.

The thing I like most about this guide is that it's not neccessarily "Scotland The Most Expensive". It has everything from "Best Fish and Chip Shops" through to top michelin starred restaurants. All this via "Best Waterfalls", "Best Woodland Walks", "Best Scenic Drives" etc. etc.

This is a handy book, but doesn't convey a great deal of feeling or enthusiasm for the place and feels a little bare. Luckily I stumbled upon the Cadogan guide to Croatia by James Stewart which really enthuses the reader and gives more information of all kinds, so I recommend that one.

If you doing any battlefield tours you will never go far wrong with getting the books by Holt's. informative, factual, easy to understand and packed with hints and tips a must for all budding historians.

Although I travelled just before a new edition of this book was published, I thought this book was excellent in helping me plan my holiday in advance. We knew we wanted to go to Thailand but weren't quite sure where - this book helped us decide based on not only things to see & do but weather condtions etc, which I found were excellent compared to many internet sites and travel brochures (which portray Thailand as one climate area, when in fact it has many different weather systems). The book was excellent and still felt 'up to date'; for example it helped us find the most fab little boutique hotel "Buddy Lodge" in Bankok which was exactly what we were looking for and never would have found otherwise. Grand big map. Its a balance between not being to small and to big.

Its good as a back up to the sat nav. Incase some plonker steals the sat nav

The first issue here is over the name of the book, It is NOT `Bitter Lemons of Cyprus'; it was published as `Bitter Lemons', and that title has far more contextual meaning. Lemons are bitter sweet, and that defines Durrell's relationship with Cyprus, his village, the villagers and indeed the UK, which he generally referred to as Pudding Island. I will declare an interest: I adore Cyprus; this book was a main reason for me to visit, and subsequently, some 20 years ago we bought an arty house in a beautiful village. We have spent eight years living amongst some of the most generous, open and warm-hearted people on earth. This rings out from Durrell's book too. This book is very predictable - formula-written. Like it is by a committee not a person.

LP's great when you first start traveling. But now I want more information about the places that locals go to and the more unusual locations, hotels and restaurants.

With this book you know you are always with the crowd whether you want it or not.

And the cultural information is very thin and unimaginative. The only thing that is really good are the maps and the great binding.

I have used Lonely Planet guides a number of times to good effect, however the Argentina guide was woefully inaccurate, resulting in a good deal of frustration. The maps are both out of date and in some cases never correct in the first place. A suggested option for tango in Buenos Aires led us into a tourist trap hell hole which ended up costing over £50 and the police getting involved. I think the book was written in 2003 and therefore is inadequate to guide a stranger.

In the end we abandonded the book and found life much easier. Argentina is a fabulous country - simply stunning. Buy another guide to avoid wasting your time there - but enjoy the place.
