. "Time Out" New York (Time Out New York)
City Travel Guides > Books > Countries and Regions
by: Time Out Guides Ltd
January 03, 2008
As travel guides go, this one combines three very different places... first there's Singapore with its very modern outlook. Then there's Malaysia bridging the vibrant outlook of Kuala Lumpur with the colonial history of Georgetown. Finally there's Brunei which is a whole lot more laid back.
In terms of contents, there's the usual details of history, etiquette, sights etc. There's also the usual combination of excellent maps with only the occassional mistake where a particular landmark has been put on the wrong side of the road. Restaurant and accomodation advice are as usual mixed (many are gone by the time you visit) but it certainly provides good ideas if you are struggling to find somewhere, and also tells you the general ... . China (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Countries and Regions
by: Damian Harper

I have just returned from china in which i spent three months there teaching and travelling. This was my first time travelling and the book was fantastic!! Alot of details and information for even the obscurest places in china. There was only one place i visted that wasn't in the lonely planet. It helped with language barrier aswell due to a lot of the places i went to were in chinese characters in the book. I will stick with the lonely planet guides when I travel in the future. Also much better than rough guide!

. The Places in Between
City Travel Guides > Books > Countries and Regions
by: Rory Stewart
April 01, 2005
I enjoyed the book, for Stewart's eye to detail and his ability to convey so well the challenges facing the people of Afghanistan. As someone who has worked occasionally in Afghanistan (and with much less insight than Stewart), I felt that he really captured the realities of Afghanistan in 2002 and it made me wonder how much the same region has changed today, if at all. Stewart has an impressive knowledge of Islamic history and culture and uses it well to provide understanding of the people and the book is worth reading just for that.
Other reviewers have commented on his prose, and it has a simpleness to it, but lacks real depth, it has a repetitive quality, not unlike the steps he took on his journey. The missing link is his reason for the journey. Of ... Read More:

. The Motorcycle Diaries
City Travel Guides > Books > Countries and Regions
by: Ernesto "Che" Guevara
July 19, 2004
This is the short, eloquent account of Che's travels around South America. He is very descriptive and evocative and this book is not only a great travelogue, but it is also a great insight into what made Che become the revolutionary he did. It looks at the exploits and relationships he experienced on the road, looking day to day for the next meal, lift or bed. A good insight into this iconic figure and a damn good read to boot.

. Vietnam (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Countries and Regions
by: Nick Ray
August 01, 2007
What is it about Lonely Planet? Like a rash, their guides are everywhere - sometimes in the most unwelcome of places. Nicely packaged and handy they may be, but they are often woefully inaccurate and incomplete. This is no exception. Cutting and pasting a few paragraphs about history and culture, this really skims the surface of a fascinating country, and leaves many fascinating places out. If you're a twentysomething Australian back-packer, then this book will probably make you very happy; if you're more discerning, and looking to explore the country's lesser known areas and learn more about its culture (and if you're interested in accuracy), then I would go for the infinitely better Rough Guide.

. Venice
City Travel Guides > Books > Countries and Regions
by: Jan Morris
October 07, 2004
I decided to read "Venice" in preparation for a week-long stay in the Italian city.
Broken into three sections -- The People, The City, The Lagoon -- "Venice" is not a chronological history of the city but a meandering look at its past, present and future. Nor is it a guidebook, although it does contain a mine of information about what to see and where to go.
I think "The Times" probably described it best when they said it was "a classic love letter to Italy's most iconic city", because it is, indeed, a beautiful missive dripping with exquisite descriptions. I found it an enormously engaging and evocative read by an accomplished writer who really knows how to string a simile or two together. For example: "Venice is a cheek-by-jowl, back-of-the-hand, under-the-counter, higgledy ...
