. The Motorcycle Diaries
City Travel Guides > Books > Countries and Regions
by: Ernesto "Che" Guevara
July 19, 2004
This is the short, eloquent account of Che's travels around South America. He is very descriptive and evocative and this book is not only a great travelogue, but it is also a great insight into what made Che become the revolutionary he did. It looks at the exploits and relationships he experienced on the road, looking day to day for the next meal, lift or bed. A good insight into this iconic figure and a damn good read to boot.

. The Rough Guide to Thailand (Rough Guide Travel Guides)
City Travel Guides > Books > Countries and Regions
by: Paul Gray, Lucy Ridout
October 26, 2006
Although I travelled just before a new edition of this book was published, I thought this book was excellent in helping me plan my holiday in advance. We knew we wanted to go to Thailand but weren't quite sure where - this book helped us decide based on not only things to see & do but weather condtions etc, which I found were excellent compared to many internet sites and travel brochures (which portray Thailand as one climate area, when in fact it has many different weather systems). The book was excellent and still felt 'up to date'; for example it helped us find the most fab little boutique hotel "Buddy Lodge" in Bankok which was exactly what we were looking for and never would have found otherwise. Also it had fantastic and accurate info on the ... Read More:

. Driving Over Lemons: An Optimist in Andalucia
City Travel Guides > Books > Countries and Regions
by: Chris Stewart
June 03, 1999
This book is so well written and witty, describing an idylic life in Spain that I am sure many will be tempted to follow in Chris's and my own footsteps. I have been through the same story as this family, having lived in Spain for the past sixteen years, longer than Chris. I speak fluent Castellano, the same as him. My warning about his book is unless you can speak Spanish perfectly, you will never enjoy half the experiences described. If you are willing to learn the language, then "Driving Over Lemmons" is so good and an inspiration. If you are inspired and are up for it then Spain is still a good choice. My advice is read the book, learn to speak Spanish, enjoy and do the same. Wonderful read and a wonderful country. I am writting this review on the PC powered by my faithfull ... Read More:

. The Places in Between
City Travel Guides > Books > Countries and Regions
by: Rory Stewart
April 01, 2005
I enjoyed the book, for Stewart's eye to detail and his ability to convey so well the challenges facing the people of Afghanistan. As someone who has worked occasionally in Afghanistan (and with much less insight than Stewart), I felt that he really captured the realities of Afghanistan in 2002 and it made me wonder how much the same region has changed today, if at all. Stewart has an impressive knowledge of Islamic history and culture and uses it well to provide understanding of the people and the book is worth reading just for that.
Other reviewers have commented on his prose, and it has a simpleness to it, but lacks real depth, it has a repetitive quality, not unlike the steps he took on his journey. The missing link is his reason for the journey. Of course there doesn't ... Read More:

. Rome (Eyewitness Travel Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Countries and Regions
from: Dorling Kindersley Publishers Ltd
February 01, 2008
Having used the Florence and Venice volumes earlier in the year, when I was asked to travel to Rome, the DK Eyewitness guide was my first port of call. I am used to its clear and ordered style, the wonderful aerial illustrations of particular areas (most useful when lost!), and, given the amount of space it would otherwise take), the information details for each venue.
Wouldn't be without it.

. Go Slow England
City Travel Guides > Books > Countries and Regions
by: Alastair Sawday
March 06, 2008
This is just the sort of guidebook I've been waiting for. Packed full of places to stay and places to visit, inspired by 'good food and artisan producers.... craftmanship and community, landscape and history'. The book is divided into geographical regions with useful maps so that you can plan your time (or dip in and out as you wish). As with all Sawday guides, the places reviewed have a thorough write up. Stunning photos are sprinkled through the book..... A book to curl up with and plan your slow adventures. Just gorgeous!
