We travelled to Western Crete twice last year ('08) and bought a few guide books before the first trip, however, this one was the only one to make the second trip (and will be with us again this year when we visit Central Crete). This edition was published in 2007 and we did find a few inaccuracies such as a recommended taverna that was no longer in business. I suspect that these were recent changes, but generally the guidance is accurate. We certainly visited places that we would never have found without this guide.

As with all Rough Guides, there are relatively few colour photographs, but it is the detailed and descriptive "local knowledge" that really stands out. Recommended for those who want to explore Crete. If you are happy ... Read More:

This one's a terrible Lonely Planet guidebook. We generally prefer the content and style of the 'Lonely Planet' range to the 'Rough Guides' but in this case buying this Crete book was an utter waste - we left ours - a spanking new, 2008 edition at our hotel at the end of the holiday as I felt I didn't want to be responsible for inflicting its awfulness on anyone else by selling it on through the medium of Ebay.

Why's it so bad? Well, Ms Kyriakopoulos, the book's Aussie author, despite having spent a whopping 57 days in total in Crete, allegedly 'researching' the content of the guide (it tells us this on the back cover) obviously hasn't done her homework properly. According to the Observer on the cover "The best book we have on Crete". Unfortunately, this statement says more about the other books the Observer has on this topic than about the quality of this tedious story.

Beevor's book claims to be about the German invasion and occupation of Crete in the Second World War and the resistance from its inhabitants. In reality it describes the defense of the island by Common Wealth troops and sabotage actions of British SOE-agents during the occupation.

We bought this map for a holiday on Crete in early 2008 and we used a hire car to get around the island. We are usually good at using maps to find our way but with this one we wasted a lot of time on wrong turnings.

The statement in the synopsis that "every road is included" is far from true. It is just not anything like that detailed. To add to the difficulty, there are a lot of major road developments underway on Crete and the map has become badly out-of-date. A good map is needed because of the lack of signposting especially in towns and villages. The coastal resorts have also seen numerous route changes and little seems to correspond to what is on the map. As well as describing the popular gorge walks and excursions, this book also takes you well off the beaten track into lovely alternative landscapes. We did many wonderful walks in solitude - unlike the Samaria Gorge walk! An enjoyable different guide that encourages you to explore on your own.

I would just like to reiterate what others have said about this book: it's wonderfully written, and captures Crete just perfectly, but loses a 'star' because of the constant religious references. However, if like me, you're able to just skip over these particular irritations, you'll enjoy this book enormously.
