.Map of Western Crete (Maps of Greek islands) Search: Crete from: Road Editions,Greece June 28, 2006 I totally agree with the previous reviewer that this is an excellent map with plenty of detail in you want to explore this beautiful island by car and on foot. I was amused by the fact that petrol stations are shown as we have never been anywhere with as many as Crete. I don't know how we would have managed to negotiate Chania and Rethynmno without the street plans on this map which correctly set out the one way system. Without such a plan of Heraklion, we managed to drive the wrong way down a one way street there! Place names are all in Greek and English which helps in interpreting road signs - in small places these are sometimes only signposted in Greek. I agree that the map is very flimsy - it started ... The author has a deep and genuine understanding of the Cretan spirit and the idiosyncracies of the various characters; even when at times he must have felt totally (and rightly) exasperated, he writes always from the perspective of one who understands and ultimately loves, and never rises to cheap-shot caricaturisation. Every word has the feel of authenticity. Laugh-aloud humour, pathos, lyricism -this book has it all. .The Body Impolitic: Artisans and Artifice in the Global Hierarchy of Value Search: Crete by: M Herzfeld December 02, 2003 The author takes his title from an adaptation of Cowan's work "The Body Politic". Herzfeld examines the roles of (and realtionship between) the craftsmen in Crete and their apprentices. For an anthropologist Herzfeld has a resonable degree of fluency and most of the Greek technical vocabulary he uses is correct. He also has a fair knowledge of the Cretan dialect - evident in some of his other works. At last we have a more human and sensitive approach that is not marred by the occasional condescending/ patronising tone that is apparent in some of his other works.
