The central thesis of this book is that Ruth Ellis did not actually commit the murder of David Blakely for which she famously became the last woman to be hanged in Britain but was a stooge for her 'other' boyfriend, Desmond Cussen, who not only trained her to shoot and drove her to the scene but also fired the fatal shots himself from cover then sped away in his own taxi (reluctantly taking a wounded by-stander to hospital!) leaving Ruth to take the rap. Why? It was all a cover for unspecified espionage activities involving her, Blakely and Stephen Ward, later a protagonist in the Profumo scandal.

This is an interesting look at the mob from someone who was a made member of the Cosa Nostra. Sammy the Bull Gravano is no angel and he pulls no punches, as he regales the reader with his tale of growing up on the mean streets of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn as the dyslexic son of Italian immigrants. A high school drop-out, Sammy graduated from local street gangs to the Cosa Nostra, taking a blood oath of silence. So much for promises.

This book is a series of taped interviews that are edited by the author, who interposes little analysis but serves to connect the dots. Steve Fielding really knows his stuff and has managed to bring together a truly comprehensive account of every British executioner of the 20th century. This is not an easy undertaking, since relatively little is known of many of them and organising it by individual story makes for a confusing chronology.

What emerges most clearly - whether or not intentionally - is that the trade attracted many bunglers, blabberers and others who were simply not up to the job and not all of them were weeded out in the application process. There are plenty of snippets to back up my increasing impression that Albert Pierrepoint was a creepy, mean-spirited backstabber with a ghoulish interest in what he did, though his competence was undeniable.

Carol Anne Davis is a criminologist but she ought to have been a detective. In her latest work, she has examined the details of murdering paedophiles in minute detail; it is a great pity that the full depravities of those killers are often not revealed in court. The first three sections of the book are devoted to the case histories of the killers, in England, the United States and then the rest of the world.

The very last section of the book looks at identifying paedophiles at an early stage, of how parents can teach their children to react and this, like the rest of the book is tremendously well written and informative. A bunch of people professionally concerned with genocide and Darfur recommended this short but outstanding book when I needed to supplement my knowledge quickly. Its 134 pages of condensed information are based on prolonged and detailed work in the region and with people who know it well. The complexity of Darfur and its crisis as well as its relationship to other regions of Sudan, Chad and Libya emerge with balance, but with a clear picture of the horrors being committed. It enlarged my knowledge greatly beyond what I had gleaned from the media and a few days spent with some refugees from Darfur. It discusses events up to early 2005, its publication year, so is not quite up to date. The experts recommended it despite pointing this out, and I'm glad they did.

The book is absolutely awesome. I felt as if I was reading a novel. But then reality sinks in when you actually reflect, realising that this is REAL LIFE DRAMA!!!!

I'm using this book for research purposes, in preperation for my dissertation. It has some very interesting facts about the increase of "yardie" immigrants, thus linking this to an increase in drugs and gun related crime???

It's a real eye opener to whats happening in our society,(in our communities).

Have a read, I promise you, you won't regret it!!!!!!
