This is a superb book. The author manages to cover the facts of the case, and highlight the unfortunate causes. It not only clarifies the story, but makes the reader feel "dirty". It's frightening to discover how one could possibly understand what happened. It's shocking, in a good way. Everyone should read this.

This book is incredible; it's extremely long but don't let that put you off - it just means you can enjoy it for longer.

Bilton tells the story of the investigation from the eyes of those who experienced it - the officers, the victims, the media and others. He manages to do it without glorifying the sadistic and evil murderer that Sutcliffe is. In fact, one of the things I most appreciated about the book was the respect he shows to the Ripper's victims and their families by not devoting an ounce of time to Sutcliffe's opinions. Sutclife has, after all, been proved to be a pathalogical liar. "Portrait of a Killer" is interesting, but as a serious Jack the Ripper investigation it's an absolute disgrace. Cornwell undertakes a total character assassination of the artist Walter Sickert - she even hints he may have harboured paedophilic tendencies -, without proving much other than that parts of his work reflect a certain disturbed mind.

A lot of the passages in the book are pure conjecture, based on logic rather than hard facts. There are lots of "if"s, "assuming that"s, "supposing thats", "had ... happened"s and "Sickert would have"s etc. throughout the book, and Cornwell constantly admits not knowing, or not having access to, certain facts, such as Sickert's whereabouts on given dates etc, and that she's unable to prove certain things.
