This is a retelling of the Road House murder of 1860. The Kents - an outwardly conventional and respectable middle class family - are horrified to discover that three year old Saville has disappeared from his cot. He is soon found gruesomely murdered and his body dumped in the outside privy. The local police arrive and begin a somewhat haphazard investigation. They decline to ask any questions of the family in the belief that people of their class would be too genteel to be involved in murder. Later Detective Inspector Jonathan Whicher arrives from London. He soon suspects one of the Kent daughters but she is released by the court and Whicher generally castigated by all for his error.

I was a bit doubtful about this title before I purchased it from Amazon. But I have to say, it was well worth the price! My only qualm would be that it is US-centric, but much of the laws of criminal behavioural studies do cross the Big Pond without too much hassle.

The author has produced a very readable book, which goes into detail on personality disorders, character disorders and pschoses, among others, and not only reports findings on the "disorders" of the criminal mind, but also offers tips and ideas on how a writer can use both characters of "unstable mind" as well as the pschologists and criminologists who study and treat them.

Those of us who want to write about murder/homicide/serial-killing etc should definitely invest ... Read More:

I first read Papillon over 20 years ago and for a long time it was my favourite book. From first page until the last I was riveted.

However,after doing some research, I have come to the conclusion it's a fabricated account. Charriere undoubtedly was imprisoned for a time in French Guayana but a growing number critics , myself included, now believe his account is an amalgamation of stories made up and also from tales/stories/exploits from other colony inmates.

Sorry if this shatters your expectations - it isn't meant to. Nevertheless Papillon is still a engrossing albeit tongue-in-cheek read!

I'm afraid it's necessary to correct the misleading impression left by the last reviewer. This is a well-researched book with an important message which never wallows in the worst humans can do - unlike some scissors and paste true crime books, generally written by journalists with one eye on the clock. It may not be particularly writerly but as Martin Amis has too often demonstrated, literary flourishes are the last thing one wants in a discussion of harrowing atrocities. Cool, clear brevity is exactly what's required here.
If one lives in the present rather than the past it may also seem natural to use American English on occasion. Many of the best crime writers are Americans, the best crime television is certainly American so I doubt whether anyone ... Read More:
