I was assigned this textbook as part of my BSc in Psychology and Criminology, and took to it right away. For a first-year Undergraduate this book is ideal as an introductory taste of Criminology with very few uses of jargon, and Hopkins Burke utilises a clear, compelling writing style to bring the possibly dull-sounding subject matter to life.
All-in-all this is a must buy for all students of Criminology, as well as those with more an interest in the field.

How do you fill the void left after watching the final episode of one of the greatest tv shows of all time ? Go back to the source and that's what this is without this book there is no The Wire. It's a remarkable book and one that hasn't really dated unlike the TV series of the same name.
The premise is well described David Simon writes about a year in the life of the homicide department of Baltimore what suprised me was that it isn't written for the journalist point of view so instead we get informed what the detectives are thinking. It's hard to explain that for the veteran detectives we see that there is no personal crusade to solve the crimes it's a job and not a highly paid one so if it's not the money what compels these individuals ... Nothing much in Dope Stories that I had not heard or read before. Could easily be taken as Mr Marks cashing in on his success, but really who can blame him? All in all the book is well put together and a fine read. Perhaps the author would do well to get out on the field (I suspect he's out to pasture) and live out some more dope adventures. Nothing quite beats the cannabis smoke coming out of the crazy horse's mouth.Mind Bomb

This book has everything a die-hard forensic fan would love. It tells everything from the crime scene to how to catch the killer. And it has some really great pictures. It also tells what really happens and what people think appens.

I liked this book so much it only took me a few hours to read it from cover to cover.

Yet another, brilliantly detailed true crime book from the No.1 Writer in America.
Ann Rule takes you step by step through the life and crimes of Jerry Brudos. From his earliest childhood memories, to his hatred for his mother, to his shoe fetishes and breaking and entering, to his marriage to Darcie (who it has to be said he worshipped), and ultimately to his lust killings of innocent women, including his macabre mutilations of their bodies after death, which eventually led to his 'bragging' confessions. It's all here, detailed, indepth and in black and white.

The praise given by critics and reviewers when this book was first published in 2004 are easily understood and justified when reading it in paperback format. While many earlier books have largely relied on a review of recent Sicilian history and events post WWII (Norman Lewis, Claire Sterling) or focussing on a very specific area (such as Alex Stille's "Excellent Cadavers" on the story of investigating magistrates Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino), this is the first real recent effort I know of in English to write a full history of the Sicilian Mafia under its correct name of Cosa Nostra. This really is a book of wisdom, althogh not a kiss and tell book about the nasty stuff Mr Pyle can't own up to. It is as close to the white line as Mr Pyle can get without being arrested. An underestimated book by an understated man.
