. Homicide: a Year on the Killing Streets
City Travel Guides > Books > Criminology
by: David Simon
March 31, 1993
How do you fill the void left after watching the final episode of one of the greatest tv shows of all time ? Go back to the source and that's what this is without this book there is no The Wire. It's a remarkable book and one that hasn't really dated unlike the TV series of the same name.
The premise is well described David Simon writes about a year in the life of the homicide department of Baltimore what suprised me was that it isn't written for the journalist point of view so instead we get informed what the detectives are thinking. It's hard to explain that for the veteran detectives we see that there is no personal crusade to solve the crimes it's a job and not a highly paid one so if it's not the money what compels these individuals ... . The Devil: Britain's Most Feared Underworld Taxman
City Travel Guides > Books > Criminology
by: Graham Johnson
August 02, 2007
Graham Johnson writes this book from the perpective of the man who the book is based on - Stephen French. Having met with Stephen and done hundreds of hours of interviews the book totaly feels like its being written from the man himself. The author writes the story from Stephens perspective to give a closer feeling to the the personal stories of his life as if hes telling them. The book has so many stories to tell of extrmely dangerous conflict situations between rival gangs, feuds with fellow crew members and the author does not hold back. The author says in the first few pages how he really wanted to get the reader a feeling of Stephens perspective. I really felt you got a very strong sense of the man from this book and read it in 2 days. This ... Read More:

. Pure Evil
City Travel Guides > Books > Criminology
by: Maureen Harvey
May 05, 2008
This book is full of typos and bad grammar, but more that that, it is full of lies. It was my dearest friend whose daughter heard all the screaming in the road and at whose house Tracie Andrews turned up and spun her lies. It was my friend, who is ex-police, that alerted the police officers to the knife shaped blood stain on Andrew's leg. She also said that Tracie had been badly beaten up (so much for the "gentle" son Harvey tries to depict). My friend is a solicitor and said that Andrews would have got a much lighter sentence if she'd admitted it was a domestic row that got out of hand. What she and I will never forgive Maureen Harvey for is revealing my friend's daughters' name. She is still on a protected list of witness and Harvey has blown it. Apart ... Read More:

. The Suspicions of Mr Whicher: or the Murder at Road Hill House: Or the Murder at Road Hill House
City Travel Guides > Books > Criminology
by: Kate Summerscale
April 07, 2008
This book exists of three interwoven strands: a recounting of a murder, a social history of the period that the murder occured, and discussions of contemporary crime fiction.
The first strand worked fine, and I appreciate the necessity of the second, but the detours into the contemporary crime fiction completely ruined the rhythm of the book for me. Where I had been hooked, I found my mind wandering, hoping the book would get back on track in as short a time as possible.
The prose was also, at times, rather too flowery for my liking.
I would have enjoyed the book more if it were a straight account of the murder which, it must be said, the author has researched very well.

. The Electric Kool-aid Acid Test
City Travel Guides > Books > Criminology
by: Tom Wolfe
February 17, 1989
Ken Keysey is a myth in his own time. The author of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest, the guru of LSD culture as the more gritty and real reflection of Timothy Leary (or I should rather say Leary was Keysey's reflection).
Given this, it is only right that he should be the central subject of a book written about this culture and time, which is in essence what the Electric Kool-aid Acid Test is.
This account describes the rise and fall of LSD culture from the early 1960s. Tom Wolfe, a prominent journalist of the time documents Keyseys journey from his early involvement in official LSD experiments and his establishment of an LSD community whose primary aim was to seek enlightenment using LSD as a tool, to Keysey's ultimate rejection of LSD.
