I have to offer a counter to the previous viewpoint. Downes and Rock is an extremely thorough text which addresses the various applications of social theory to the question of deviance and offending. It is, at times, dense and difficult to read, but that reflects the subject matter: simplistic understanding of issues of deviance and crime result in simplistic responses. I cannot think of a single text that produces both an overview and depth of understanding.

This book covers a whole range of issues involved in poling, for its size its not to expensive either. I found it very helpful when writing my dissertation on 'the role of the police', it avoids academic jargon and makes pretty easy reading, yet at the same time it's not over simplistic. A great book to have if you're interested in looking at the police from a sociological perspective.

Actually, having read quite a few of these types of books I was expecting a bit of exaggeration, however it was well written and chillingly disturbing in it's honesty. It leaves you questioning the so-called 'born evil' and wondering just how much we are responsbile for these 'child killers.' Definitly recommended.

Graham Johnson writes this book from the perpective of the man who the book is based on - Stephen French. Having met with Stephen and done hundreds of hours of interviews the book totaly feels like its being written from the man himself. The author writes the story from Stephens perspective to give a closer feeling to the the personal stories of his life as if hes telling them. The book has so many stories to tell of extrmely dangerous conflict situations between rival gangs, feuds with fellow crew members and the author does not hold back. The author says in the first few pages how he really wanted to get the reader a feeling of Stephens perspective.
