This book is quite simply the best researched and best written book that I have ever read. Truely horrifying but was unable to put it down. A must read for anyone interested in Northern Ireland.

i agree with previous reviews that this is an "interesting" book to read but sadly it shows what a real waste of life these kind of people live. the author talks about his soldiers & wars but these characters actions are not anything like war/soldiers/battles etc . the actions they take are nothing short of brain dead cowardness carried out by dis-illusioned people who actually think they are hard maybe a part in areal war would show just how weak minded they are.he also talks about how "big" the crips gang is but yet when they go to prison they fight with other "crip" gangs - yet in the book the "crips" are protrayed as this big powerful unit when really they are sad little individual street gangs

I have only read this book very recently despite knowing the story for years and having visited the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam three times. As this book is written by such a young person I expected the quality of writing to be juvenille. However the standard is remarkably mature. This diary is an historical document that describes a period in time that all Europeans should be ashamed of and learn from. The horrors are still unbelievable how ever many times they are studied or discussed. The Diary of Anne Frank describes a very normal young girl with all the normal emotions of the average teen. I would thoroughly recommend that everyone reads this wonderful poignant novel.

Ross Kemp has written a very absorbing study of gangs around the word. So he goes to places like Jamaica, Cape Town, New Zealand, Russia and meets members of these gangs. These gangs have few, if any, redeeming features. You won't feel uplifted by these characters at all. The author's participation in this study is why it is so immediate and interesting. He does so at quite great risk to his own person: wisely he concentrates on the gangsters rather than himself, but throughout the book, he does add the odd telling comment. Ross Kemp has done the public a great service by writing this book. Its not pleasant reading, but it is certainly educational.

I have just read this book in one sitting. I couldn`t put it down. For one family - and a respectable decent family at that - to suffer so much pain and loss is beyond imagination. You couldn`t make it up. Young steven abducted at 7 yrs of age and held hostage until he was 14 yrs old, all the time being sexually abused by his captor - then escaping and taking with him a little 5 year old who had been abducted by the same man just a couple of weeks before. Steven was later killed in a road accident after marrying, and having two children of his own.If all that wasn`t suffering enough for his poor parents, then steven`s older brother went on the rampage and became a mass murderer !
It just doesn`t bear thinking about.

A startling account of the depravity which evidently characterises society on Pitcairn Island and of the delusion which appears to make people (otherwise, no doubt, perfectly rational and concerned for the welfare of the vulnerable) excuse the inexcusable or deny the undeniable. It may be that some form of responsibility spreads far wider than the island itself, but there comes a time when gangs have to be broken up. There would seem to be little or no justification for preservation of this weird colony, not even for the benefit of anthropological research.

We need to be able (hopefully) to educate and tell others about the dangers of people like this. The public and parents need to be on the offensive and make sure that this type of crime cannot be put into action again. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and the narrator, looking back over the time he spent in Soham, can piece together the timeline from witness accounts and his own views. He indeed spent time and asked questions of Huntley and Carr, noting as other journalists did that something wasn't 'quite right'.

I didn't follow the story that carefully at the time in August 2002, just snippetts so it was made more clear to me by reading the tale from the time of the abduction to the trial.

I don't believe Bernard O'Mahoney is an angel, but he certainly makes a great author.

His prose is sardonic and to the point, sometimes very funny. The stuff about Dave Courtney had me howling with laughter. I also remember the TV programme Wimps to Warriors and all agreed at work the following day, that Courtney acted and dressed like something out of a comedy act.

That said, it's a pretty sad fact some impressionable youngsters take such fakes seriously and then try to emulate them with such appalling consequences.

This is reminiscent of the legend of Damocles. Who constantly flattered Dionysius, the King of Syracuse, admiring his position of prestige and power which he wanted to attain. So Dionysius arranged for Damocles to attend a lavish banquet. ... Read More:
