. England (Lonely Planet Country Guide)

I haven't had a problem with the accuracy and the usefulness of the information in this Lonely Planet guide to England. I have no complaints there. The prices and the opening times are right. The recommendations insightful and the options presented (more or less) clearly.
My only complaint is that the depth of information is quite limited and the maps don't often cover more than the very city town centre of most locations.
I can understand that the book can only be so big but really, who wants to carry around a chapter of England's history when you travel and then resort to a series of additional maps and guide information. If you're going to carry this great hunking book when you travel, take it to read as well as as your guide book and ... Read More:

. Real England: The Battle Against the Bland
Search: England
by: Paul Kingsnorth
June 01, 2009
Where do you go to buy your plants, food, books, cds from?
Do you go to your local retailer, in spite of the fact that his/her prices are bound to be higher than the big suppliers?
Or do you buy them form Amazon, Homebase, Tesco... so as to save yourself some penies?
This book shows that the consequences of that simple, daily choise are indeed far reaching and momentous. It would be hypocritical and irresponsable to blame it all on the 'big and nasty corporation', when the fact of the matter is that if they suceed at all is because people like you and me support them with our choices.

I bought 'Icons of England' for a friend who hasn't been to England for 26 years. You can't read a book by the cover, but the cover is so unfeasibly English, it sums up the book so well. Every page made me smile. The photography is wonderful, the words, thought provoking. I'll be delivering the book to my friend on 3rd April; I hope he enjoys it!

. Hidden Treasures of England: A Guide to the Country's Best-kept Secrets
Search: England
by: Michael McNay
April 30, 2009
Having extensively travelled around Britain I was looking forward to reading this and was not disappointed. It shows that you can find something new on even the most well trodden tourist routes, and I was impressed by the broad scope of it. The book is ideal for both city and countryside visits as it covers everything from the Lowry gallery and Gothic town hall in Manchester to Derek Jarman's isolated cottage in Dungeness.
I learnt many things I didn't know, particularly how the art gallery in Exeter hosts a painting of Dartmoor by Edward Burra, which I found interesting as I'd always thought of him as a painter of American scenes, and I was impressed by the way Michael McNay highlights things that have almost been made invisible due to their proximity to better known monuments, ...
