. Nineteen Seventy Seven (Red Riding Quartet)
Search: England
by: David Peace
July 12, 2001
As they would probably say in Yorkshire, "what the bloody hell was all that about?" Having now read two of this author's books, I feel I have sussed his technique which is to use the vagueness of abstraction to disguise lack of plot and inconsistency of storyline. Strip away the "clever" switching of character telling the first person narrative and the italicised prose and the dream sequences and you have left something that doesn't quite add up. Back to the Yorkshie vernacular and I would say that Mr Peace is "too clever for his own good". What could be a very gripping, sexy, noir and grity novel is spoilt for me by some unnecessarily complicated literal trickery. I enjioyed 1974 but by the time I was half way through ... Read More:

. In England

by: Don McCullin
November 08, 2007
Don McCullin's latest collection of photos is a dark mirror. The prints are beautifully rendered-- uniformly dark but perfectly toned in their range of light and shadow. The subject matter is dark too -- there is little to indicate any social progress to lessen the gap between the privileged and the have-nots over the nearly fifty years the collection represents at its maximum span. McCullin's pictures show bleakly how little has changed over that period.
But perhaps what is most striking is how the English at play still look grotesque regardless of class. You expect shots of your parents generation to look odd; it is startling to see your own generation repeat the same inanities of dress and expression. Take away the captions and ... Read More:

Didn't want to put this down, couldn't put it down. No housework done today!! A great tale through the war years and beyond. Something a little bit different. If you like Maureen Lee, you will love this new saga, set in Liverpool. One of those stories that you wish would never end.

. Blind to the Bones
Search: England
by: Stephen Booth
March 22, 2004
A newspaper and magazine journalist for over 25 years, Stephen Booth was born in the English Pennine mill town of Burnley. He was brought up on the coast at Blackpool. Stephen gave up journalism in 2001 to write crime novels full time.
Withens is a small village in the Peak District and like many other small town and villages it is troubled by theft and vandalism, but Withens problems stem from mainly one local family, the Oxleys, a family from hell. Now the village is the focus of a murder investigation. A young man's body has been discovered out on the cold and desolate moors nearby and the man is a member of the family from hell, he is an Oxley.
Police are also trying to solve the mystery of a young girl who vanished ... Read More:

. Postcards

by: Annie Proulx
January 01, 2003
Some people really do not like this book. Some have given it one star in a review, and others have complained that it does not stand up next to Proulx's much more famous "The Shipping News", yet I feel moved to come to its defence. This is Proulx's first novel, and, for those who do now know the storyline, it begins with the collapse of a family unit on a small farm and goes on to chart the progress (in inverted commas) of the members of that family across the geography and time of the United States in the 20th century.
The fiercest accusation levelled at this book is that it lacks a plot, and I would be inclined to agree, but this is not necessarily a bad thing. Indeed, I often find that otherwise good books are spoiled by their plots, and many ... Read More:
