Modern sportsmen are getting into a bad habit of writing books far too early in their careers. This is a totally unnecessary effort from KP. From the corny cover photo to his self-protestations of intensity it makes for a poor read and lacks insight. At present he just needs to let his runs do the talking.

Pietersen would be a lot more readable if he showed a bit more self awareness. His ill-informed views on the South Africa quota system make him sound ridiculously naive and lack any credibility. It is easy to see why his media quotes have regularly made him appear more obtuse than he really is.

My advice is stick to batting old son and keep that trap shut.

What a splendid reference book. Naturally I was thrilled to see several parish churches of mine included...

Simon Jenkins' reviews are spot on, the pictures detailed, the reviews wordy without loosing the reader or being patronising. Often when I've passed a church on a train, or am going to a particular part of the country, I check to see whether there is anything of interest, and I'm often surprised to find out the most bizarre facts!

A thoroughly good book.

Many books can be found outlining Georgian political history and more than one biography has been written on Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, but the everyday lives of genteel women have had less attention. In this book, Vickery uses surviving letters, diaries, accounts and pocketbooks of a selection of Georgian women living genteel lives in Northern England. I found the book interesting, but fairly heavy going in places. Any modern woman reading the chapter on childbirth will be glad to live in the current age! This is a good insight into everyday life and the role and functions of women within society. However, the type in my copy I found to be quite small, and so a little hard on the eyes. With a remarkable memory for the smallest detail, imagination, and an appreciation of beauty, John Fowler was called "the Prince of Decorators." He may well have deserved that sobriquet, but in this lushly illustrated 240 volume we also learn that he was not a prince of a fellow.

Early in his career Fowler worked as a painter for Thornton Smith, commercial decorators. It was there that he learned to paint "the Chinese wallpapers that were so fashionable at the time", and also how to grime and distress furniture. Later, in 1928 or 1929 he set out to work on his own, often freelancing for other decorators. still not a bad way to pass an evening. Obviously a talented bloke but dispersing the book with clippings of Best and Bowles to try and elevate him into their company is a cheap trick. Surely the whole argument is undermined in the first chapter when his twin brother gets picked on teams and he can't. Maybe the twin was the greatest? What I did enjoy about this book was the trip back to when footballers were ordinary blokes and lived in the community, when football matches still had a raw edge to them on and off the pitch and when getting up off your arse and going to the game was the only way to see it.

Edward Marston is the pseudonym of Keith Miles, a fairly prolific and extremely good writer of mainly Elizabethan and medieval mysteries. He has also written mysteries under his own name with both sporting and golf backgrounds. However it is primarily the books that take place earlier in history that I am interested in. He read modern history at Oxford and has had many jobs, including university lecturer, but fortunately for all his readers, he turned to the writing profession.

This is a must read for anyone who wants to start to understand the youth culture that has led to so many stabbings and shootings in London in recent months. Written in Alex's usual gripping and immediate style I was grabbed by the narrative right from the start. The "street language" can be challenging, but you soon get used to it (and if you're like me have to be careful not to start using it yourself!). Alex lives within the community about which he writes and clearly has observed the culture he talks about first hand. Keenly observed and with strong characterisation you get caught up with the action and live the events, so as the action unfolds you start to understand the main character's motivation.
