. The Rainbow Machine: Tales from a Neuro-linguist's Journal
Search: England
by: Andrew T. Austin
November 05, 2007
'With hindsight, maybe dressing up as Satan was a step too far, but sometimes I just cannot resist. When a consultant psychiatrist called me to book an appointment to "confront her Catholic guilt", then something inside my head just started shouting "Go on!! She's a psychiatrist! Do it!! Do the session dressed as Satan!!"'
If you like that extract, then you'll love this book. It's a series of bite-sized articles, case studies and "Tales from a neurolinguist's journal" drawn from Austin's practice as a hypnotherapist and former career as a psychiatric nurse.
The book comes with heavyweight endorsement from the likes of Steve Andreas and Bill O'Hanlon, who describes Austin as 'the British Milton Erickson' - although ... Read More:

. Criminal Law
Search: England
by: Tony Storey, Alan Lidbury
September 14, 2007
If you're studying Crime as your law option at A-level (or even if your just interested, or doing higher qualifications), I'd highly reccomend this book. It's fantastic in that it seperates cases from the 'blurb' of the book by putting the cases in grey boxes. This is extremely useful if you are reading up on a set of cases from a variety of books (I had about four different text books for my A-level which I consulted, this being the easiest). It's easy to read, and the diagrams and tables really ease the understanding of some of the areas - defences particularly. I note that the defences were quite useful in this book - it gives a few pages of prose for each different one, with a few important cases (eg. Majewski for intoxication), ... Read More:

Roy of the Rovers has a special place in many peoples hearts as well as my own. For many young boys he was a hero and someone to aspire to. He always did his best and many kids impression of a great footballer and a great man came from the Roy of the Rovers comics. The comics followed the trials and tribulations of Roy Race, manager and star striker of Melchester Rovers. . Britain AD: A Quest for Arthur, England and the Anglo-Saxons
Search: England
by: Francis Pryor
September 05, 2005
I found this book so irritating and contradictory that I started writing angry notes (in biro) in the margin, and I'm not even an archaeologist! Pryor takes the evidence he wants and ignores the rest. When he has something sensible to say about cultural influences through the ages, for example, the flow of ideas rather than just people he is on well-trodden ground. When he has something new to say it comes out as garbled nonsense. He allows his pre-history background to cloud his judgement - almost to the point of not admitting any 'events' in history at all! "We know that rapid social change just does not happen" - what?!

. Katie in London
Search: England

March 04, 2004
My eldest son (now aged 7) loves this book. The story is good and the illustrations superb. It is a fascinating tour around London and at an appropriate level for children. If you are going up to London with your child, then read this book first - its shows them all the sights and will make them enjoy it more.

. Unloved: The True Story of a Stolen Childhood
Search: England
by: Peter Roche
August 23, 2007
It is hard to comprehend the devastating effects such parents as Peter's could have on a whole family but Peter writes truthfully and from the heart, explaining the minute details of his heartrending and difficult life. I was lost in this book for days. I was furious that almost every adult failed Peter and his siblings as they grew up hungry, victimised and unloved, for years. The people I was most annoyed with were the teachers, I hope one or two of the teachers from Peter's various schools read this book and learn something from it and remember how they could have helped, yet didn't. As for the Roche parents, a disaster, they couldn't look after themselves let alone their offspring. Peter is a walking tribute to triumph over extreme adversity and a great writer. I will recommend this book ... Read More:

. The History of the Kings of Britain (Classics)
Search: England
by: Geoffrey of Monmouth
January 25, 1973
In terms of reliability as a historical source Monmouth's History of the Kings of Britain ranges from just plausible to down right nonsensical but you can't take away the sheer brilliance of literary construct on the part of Geoffrey of Monmouth. The farther of Arthurian romance does not fail to entertain.
Only two criticisms which makes it a 4 instead of a 5 star read, Monmouth crams around 2000 years of history into about 250 pages, as such sometimes the book moves at such a pace he just lists kings without passing any comment on them making them instantly forgettable. The only chapter I didn't enjoy was the one on Merlin, I just find it too far out there, maybe it is because I'm a philistine but it just reads like the ramblings of a lunatic.
