. Introduction to Policing
Search: England
by: Michael Rowe
March 30, 2008
I was taught by Adrian Chandler and he, of course, recommended his book. I bought it as a help for seminar preparation and have to say that this book has been a fantastic help throughout the year, especially when it came to exam preparation. There are so many questions to practice, with an answer provided. I would not have wanted to miss this book.

. Head Over Heels in the Dales
Search: England
by: Gervase Phinn
March 06, 2003
I came across this book by chance. Having grown up & been educated in the Yorkshire Dales, I am attracted to stories about this region. However it isn't necessary to have lived there to appreciate this book. It's not necessary either to have read the first two novels, I hadn't and it didn’t spoil anything, although having read this one I'd like to read the others now. Nor is it necessary to have an interest in schooling or education in general : it’s makes for a funny and touching read and I’m sure it would appeal to all ages/all readers. Phinn writes about his real life experiences as a school inspector in the Yorkshire Dales with candour and warmth and the reader can picture him trying to suppress a smile as he faces ... Read More:

. Confessions of an English Opium-Eater (Dover Thrift)
Search: England
by: Thomas De Quincey
February 01, 2000
This is a gripping read.Poor Quincey is left first to starve by his friends and then becomes dependent on opium in order to relieve the torture of his decayed teeth.
What I found most interesting was the way in which opium revived long lost memories from his youth and childhood in extraordinary detail-Quincey himself remarks with astonishment at the brain's hidden powers of retention-something which is more commonly related as an effect of trauma and near-death experiences (as in" my life ran before my eyes").
Amazingly, despite his dependency Quincey still kept churning out the copy like an old trooper and hung on to his teeth.
Thank goodness for modern medicine!

. Maudsley and Burn's Land Law: Cases and Materials
Search: England
by: E. H. Burn
October 21, 2004
While a worthwhile purchase if you are looking simply for text and materials, the book does not compare well to other rival titles because often detailed extracts are unsupported by the author's commentary. In a subject as complex and seemingly fluidic as English land law this is very necessary and while exposition is provided in many places, it is markedly lacking in others. An alternative, which both manages to offer a wider selection of cases and references to countless, though all relevant, journal articles is Nigel P. Gravell's Land Law: Text And Materials.

. Renaissance Literature: An Anthology (Blackwell Anthologies)
Search: England
from: WileyBlackwell
December 19, 2002
I used this book during my degree course, and it came in use no end. It has a large selection of texts, both recognised classics and less familiar ones. A particularly useful aspect is that it has both poetic and prose works that are interesting for their literary value and also a number of texts whose historical value is very high, although of course all the texts have both historical and literary value.
There is a good chunk of Spenser, which is enough to introduce you to him, (although to study further a more annotated version would be helpful), and helpings of the other main poets like Wyatt, Surrey, Sidney, Jonson, Marlowe, Donne and Herbert. It is also interesting to find poems from monarchs and prominent courtiers thrown in there ... Read More:
