. A PENNY A DAY
Search: England
by: Lilian Harry
June 12, 2008
Compact, informative gem of a book covering all the main tourist attractions Manchester has to offer along with restaurants and bars with short reviews. Useful things it includes is web addresses, opening times and costs of activities and attractions. Includes maps of areas which makes it easier to plan days out. I have lived in Manchester for 5 years and it still has many gems in this book that I still need to discover. A book that I now refer to as 'my Manchester bible'

. Intrigue In The Village
Search: England
by: Rebecca Shaw
August 05, 2004
For me this is the best of the series, made even better by listening to it on long journeys. Without going into story details, you will be hard pressed not to want to know what happens next once you switch this on. It is also an audio book you can not listen to only once. Can I say anything bad about these Turnham Malpas series of books, in a word no. Good fun, great characters and easy listening, just right for the car.

. A Journal of the Plague Year (Dover Thrift)
Search: England
by: Daniel Defoe
November 30, 2001
Imagine every other person in your social circle, family, friends, workplace and high street dropping dead. This was the reality of the Black Death, at least in the more crowded settlements. A tragedy beyond imagination that Defoe brings alive.
It's not the mortality that grips you, catastrophic as they were, but how people, even close relatives, shunned each other because of the near-certainty of contracting the disease and ending up dead themselves.
It's probably my duty to highlight, too, that the Black Death was almost certainly not bubonic plague as it doesn't fit the facts of how the disease spread, but hemorrhagic fever. One of the key pieces of evidence is the outbreak of plague in Iceland, which is known not to harbour a ... Read More:

. Daniel Deronda (Penguin Classics)
Search: England
by: George Eliot
October 26, 1995
Although academically Middlemarch is always regarded as Eliot's masterpiece, I've always thought this novel deserves the title. Unlike another reviewer here I don't think the characters are either shallow or 2-dimensional, and it's important that Gwendolen starts off as being a conventional spoilt beauty because that makes her growth and change all the more compelling and significant.
As a woman writing in 19th century England, Eliot bravely highlights the impacts of poverty and the implications for women who are forced to prostitute themselves effectively in the marriage market, since a career is out of the question. This is the dark underside of Jane Austen and an important antidote to that sunny view of male/female relationships and the economic reality behind ... Read More:
