. Henry V (The New Penguin Shakespeare)
Search: England
by: William Shakespeare, Arthur Raleigh Humphreys
June 26, 1975
Required to read Henry for my AP English Language class, I came into the play with a bias. I honestly felt that it would be a boring political play. I was utterly wrong! A huge fan of Shakespeare, I found Henry V to be a formidable match for the Bard's more critically acclaimed plays, such as Hamlet and Macbeth. Henry has it all! Shakespeare's attitude toward Henry the King is certainly one of admiration. By communicating the fact that an effective monarch must have a complete understanding of the common subjects (Pistol and Bardolph and Quickly), Shakespeare sets up Henry to be the ideal Christian king. The controlled language of Henry's speeches, particularly his response to the Dauphin's idiotic insult, also glorifies Henry. I certainly ... Read More:

. Narrowboat Dreams: A Journey North by England's Waterways
Search: England
by: Steve Haywood
July 07, 2008
What a great read! This is a hilariously funny follow-up to Steve Haywood's earlier canal journey in "Fruit Flies Like a Banana...".
He has managed to capture that sense of "where do I belong?" that so many of us East Midlanders experience. As a Nottingham man, I can even forgive him coming from Leicester because he kept me smiling for 300 odd pages.
What I particularly like is the way he captures the singlemindedness of the lone adventurer as he lovingly describes the narrow world of canal life without ever losing the priorities of his sickly Mother and his partner Em.
Just read it.
Mind you, I bet you will never eat a cornetto with the same enthusiasm again.

. The Fears of Henry IV: The Life of England's Self-Made King
Search: England
by: Ian Mortimer
July 03, 2008
For many of us, Henry IV is the king who deposed Richard II, fathered Henry V and features in three of Shakespeare's historical plays. He reigned as King of England from 1399 to 1413 and while the significant events of his reign are documented in history, the man himself largely remains in the shadows.
In this book, Ian Mortimer sets out to bring Henry IV out of the shadows by providing both context and perspective for his actions. Mortimer's research and energetic writing do shed light, but it is not quite enough to infuse Henry IV with personality and life. The people around Henry IV largely remain in the shadows and it is their perspectives that would enable us to get a clearer picture of the man who was the king.
Ian Mortimer has ... Read More:

when i first started reading this book i thought i was not going to like it,but i carried on reading it and was glad i did.boyd and katey are made for each other but only boyd seems to know this.he put up with a lot from katey what with sea sickness and receiving abloody nose and black eye from tony i would say he really did love her.a great book and i simply must mention james and tony, they really do make me laugh. malory books would not be the same without those two in them.i cannot wait for the younger malory children to grow up and fall in love.

. The Back Passage
Search: England
by: James Lear
April 17, 2008
Yes, it's entertaining and yes it's arousing and thus fulfils its own brief. But ... oh dear Mr Lear, on page TWO you identify the river that flows through Cambridge as the Isis. It isn't. The Isis flows through Oxford. The "old" name of Cambridge's river Cam is the Granta (like the literary magazine). In a confection such as "Back Passage", it's these details (easily checked on Wikipedia, for God's sake), that make the difference between a genre-subverting delight and a ho-hum "well ... it's sort of OK and ... sort of fun ..."
Louis LaSalle's cover photograph is, as usual with Mr LaSalle, drop-dead sexy.

. McNae's Essential Law for Journalists
Search: England
by: Tom Welsh, Walter Greenwood, David Banks
June 21, 2007
As a working journalist, this is the only book I (and every colleague I've ever worked with on any newsdesk) reach for time and time again. Not only is it bang up to date, it explains all aspects of reporting law clearly and succinctly.
Unsure of what libel is? How to defend against it? Are you in contempt of court? Breaching the Official Secrets Act? Taking photographs of children? Invading somebody's privacy? McNae's knows. And it's written in a way to tell you quickly.
It's known as The Bible in the regional newsrooms I've worked in all my life - and it's easy to see why when you read it. I can't recommend this highly enough: EVERY reporter should have their own copy.
