. Anita and Me
Search: England
by: Meera Syal
April 07, 1997
Anita and Me is a brilliant debut novel by Meera Syal. The novel journeys during the days of 1960's Britain set in small town in the midlands. The story is narrated by Meena a born and bred second generation Asian who experienced life of what life is like living in a Punjabi family household and within the English community.
The narrative approach is superb and filled with interesting details about the Indian way of life and how it conflicts with Western values. The author being herself a second generation, has really added her own experience and knowledge to deliver a superb piece of storytelling. The main focal point is about divided loyalty. In the context of the novel, Meena wants indulge in habits such as eating fish and chips ... Read More:

. Festivals (Common Worship: Services and Prayers for the Church of England)
Search: England
from: Church House Publishing
2008-02
I have also read this book from cover to cover and I think that sadly it it is an illustration of the unproductive and often petty argument that flows back and forth between the 'new atheists', who (at the risk of oversimplification) object primarily to organised religion's insistence on compliance, and their opponents, who (see risk above) tend to recycle whichever of the 'cosmological' or 'argument from design' proofs of God they prefer. People seeking enlightenment as to the nature of atheism or theism will feel frustrated at the reliance in this book on the 2 proofs mentioned above. And if they get that far, they will feel downright disheartened at Varghese's anti-Dawkins piece in the Appendix, which is full of logical holes and indulges in the "what a silly ... Read More:

. The Southern Fells (Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells)
Search: England
by: A. Wainwright
September 14, 2007
This is an astonishingly good revision of the classic guide, which I have used for many years. If you're going to use it 'in anger' it's to be preferred to the original edition.
In a sense, Chris Jesty does himself an injustice, because his new material is spliced in so incredibly well with Wainwright's, both in style and in lettering, that it's often only when you look at the original that you realise that it actually is new material.
Also, the quality of the reproduction is excellent - better, as far as I can see, than that of the later printings of the first edition
The same comments apply to the revised 'Central Fells', and, on the strength of these excellent volumes, I have ordered the other two.

. Lord Peter - a Collection of All the Lord Peter Wimsey Stories
Search: England
by: Dorothy L. Sayers
1986-11
This was written in the days when detective fiction was about great and often eccentric characters and when intellectual and mind-boggling puzzles were the order, rather than lots of blood and gore - a bit like Agatha Christie. If you like that, then you'll love this collection of all the short stories featuring Sayers' eccentric aristocratic detective (way before boring old Linley!) Lord Peter Wimsey. Sayers herself was a serious intellectual, having translated Dante and worked on early christianity, but while there are the occasional touches of her erudition here, these are basically little gems of detection which feature real characters in a wonderfully glamorous 1930-40s setting. Possibly old-fashioned, but still hugely entertaining.

. The Dark Is Rising Sequence 5 Volume Boxed Set
Search: England
by: Susan Cooper

I have treasured these books since childhood, luckily for me my first child is approaching the age where I can read them to him. I still remember being totally captivated by the characters and stories - in the way Harry Potter has for a new generation. Like the Potter, these books chronicle the ancient battle of good versus evil - and how the choices we make for ourselves can influence the outcome. And what stories! I know there has been a film, but refused to watch it on the grounds that these stories should be read in order, and the film appeared to jump right in at the middle. I cannot recommend these books highly enough.

. Nineteen Seventy Seven (Red Riding Quartet)
Search: England
by: David Peace
July 12, 2001
As they would probably say in Yorkshire, "what the bloody hell was all that about?" Having now read two of this author's books, I feel I have sussed his technique which is to use the vagueness of abstraction to disguise lack of plot and inconsistency of storyline. Strip away the "clever" switching of character telling the first person narrative and the italicised prose and the dream sequences and you have left something that doesn't quite add up. Back to the Yorkshie vernacular and I would say that Mr Peace is "too clever for his own good". What could be a very gripping, sexy, noir and grity novel is spoilt for me by some unnecessarily complicated literal trickery. I enjioyed 1974 but by the time I was half way through 1977 I got very tired of his technique. ... Read More:
