Once I'd read 'The Pupil', I was hooked and I've read and re-read the whole series. Captivated by the characters, drawn into the enclosed community of Caper Court, I snapped this book up and polished it off in a couple of hours.

But I cheated. I quickly decided that I had little interest in the Ukranian Money Laundering sub-plot. Disappointingly, it posed few ethical dilemmas for Leo Davies. So I skipped those bits. Rachel was drearily single, Leo's new girl-friend was tiresome, and like, I dunno, whether I can bear to follow, like, a seventeen year old school-girl's sloaney, like, drivel, right? (Gawd, I hate it when authors slow me down by doing that to young people's speech.) So I skipped those bits too.

This highly informative account of Anne Boleyn brings to life a Tudor woman once seen as elusive and obscure.
Due to the high volume of biased primary accounts of Anne Boleyn written by the likes of Chapuys (the Spanish ambassador to England at the time) and others, it has been notoriously difficult to make an objective and impartial assessment of Anne Boleyn however Ives succeeds in bringing the true character of Anne Boleyn to life using a variety of sources, challenges biased accounts of Anne's life (such as Chapuys' accounts of the ailing marriage) and also presents compelling evidence to support his assertions, such as the controversy surrounding Anne's birth date.

Yes, it's in glorious colour for the first time, and while it takes a little getting used to, it is a great improvement. Unfortunately, in bringing us this "luxury", Spinks have taken their eye off the ball and fallen down with the basics. The book clearly has not been given a final proof-read, and now contains far too may errors. Pictures are not always of the coins they are supposed to be, and some values have clearly been transposed. It smacks of a rushed job. This is still the English coin collector's bible, but for me it's credibility has been compromised, and while the new colour pictures are pretty, I will still be referring back to my copy of last year's edition to check things. Boxing Day 1962 was the day the most prolific scorer this country has ever produced received an injury that was to finish his playing career. A late friend of mine was there that day at Gigg Lane Bury and he said it was a very sad day. However, with hindsight one wonders if Cloughies misfortune was the key to making him possibly the greatest manager ever by turning around not one but two clubs in turmoil. From the moment he began Managing Hartlepool to his last fateful match in charge of Notts Forest he was a man driven to be the best. It is all here in a great read although I must say I found the earlier Autobiography funnier with a lot of quips and comments. This is an astonishingly good revision of the classic guide, which I have used for many years. If you're going to use it 'in anger' it's to be preferred to the original edition.

In a sense, Chris Jesty does himself an injustice, because his new material is spliced in so incredibly well with Wainwright's, both in style and in lettering, that it's often only when you look at the original that you realise that it actually is new material.

Also, the quality of the reproduction is excellent - better, as far as I can see, than that of the later printings of the first edition

The same comments apply to the revised 'Central Fells', and, on the strength of these excellent volumes, I have ordered the other two.

Mollie Panter-Downes takes a wonderfully penetrating look at how World War II affects the daily lives of families, wives, and veterans. She paints a nostalgic picture of these very 'English' lives, yet does not shy away from the harsh realities the conflict produced for those left at home. The title story is particularly moving in its potrayal of Mr.Craven's mistress 'Mrs. Craven'. This middle-aged spinster's deep loneliness and anguish when her companion has gone to fight and his regular letters suddenly cease, touches at the heart of human suffering. From the five Persephone books I have read, this stands out as a favourite.

I thought that this book was just OK and nothing else. I could put it down and I wasnt desperately trying to find 5 minutes to pick it back up again.

Not having read the first book, it was a little bit difficult for me grasp who was who and what had happened previously. I think the author assumes that you have read the previous book.

I also found the book a bit rushed. There is no real description of the characters and I found that I didnt really care too much for them.

I see the ending coming from about a third of the way through the book, and I really dont think that it was a good one, a bit of a let down and a cop out.
