A very easy to read short victorian novel covering many aspects of slum life. Unsentimental un moralistic quite refreshing for the times I would have thought.
With a gripping compelling style Morrison brings the characters to life not forgetting interesting portrayals of various women of the slum community.

As a mental health student nurse studying for a BSc (hons) Degree, there are two areas that I continually struggle with day in and day out, the first is medication and the second is the Mental Health Act 1983, can you imagine the confusion when the Amended Mental Health Act 2007 came out. This book has been really good for me as it not only includes the full mental health act but also the amendments from 2007. also, this book includes mental capacity act. Basically, it has everything you need to help you plough through the current legislation in preparation for the 2007 act implementation in October. Boxing Day 1962 was the day the most prolific scorer this country has ever produced received an injury that was to finish his playing career. A late friend of mine was there that day at Gigg Lane Bury and he said it was a very sad day. However, with hindsight one wonders if Cloughies misfortune was the key to making him possibly the greatest manager ever by turning around not one but two clubs in turmoil. From the moment he began Managing Hartlepool to his last fateful match in charge of Notts Forest he was a man driven to be the best. It is all here in a great read although I must say I found the earlier Autobiography funnier with a lot of quips and comments. Some people really do not like this book. Some have given it one star in a review, and others have complained that it does not stand up next to Proulx's much more famous "The Shipping News", yet I feel moved to come to its defence. This is Proulx's first novel, and, for those who do now know the storyline, it begins with the collapse of a family unit on a small farm and goes on to chart the progress (in inverted commas) of the members of that family across the geography and time of the United States in the 20th century.

The fiercest accusation levelled at this book is that it lacks a plot, and I would be inclined to agree, but this is not necessarily a bad thing. Indeed, I often find that otherwise good books are spoiled by their plots, and ... Read More:

I had to read this for GCSE in 1994 and it was a struggle from start to finish. It truly was 'hard times' reading this book, but something in it did appeal to me, because it didn't turn me off of Dickens. I have read further novels by him since - and not always because I have been forced to! There was a good TV series made of this book (the teacher made us watch it), with Bob Peck in it - that white hunter-type character from the first Jurassic Park film, who has since died, apparently.

Didn't want to put this down, couldn't put it down. No housework done today!! A great tale through the war years and beyond. Something a little bit different. If you like Maureen Lee, you will love this new saga, set in Liverpool. One of those stories that you wish would never end.

I bought this book recently and haven't been able to put it down.

As a die-hard Red and fan of Ronaldo, I have read a few biographies on him and this was was the best by far! Well-written, very interesting and a detailed account of the life of the world's greatest footballer!

I would definately recommend buying this book......you will not be dissapointed!!!!

Mollie Panter-Downes takes a wonderfully penetrating look at how World War II affects the daily lives of families, wives, and veterans. She paints a nostalgic picture of these very 'English' lives, yet does not shy away from the harsh realities the conflict produced for those left at home. The title story is particularly moving in its potrayal of Mr.Craven's mistress 'Mrs. Craven'. This middle-aged spinster's deep loneliness and anguish when her companion has gone to fight and his regular letters suddenly cease, touches at the heart of human suffering. From the five Persephone books I have read, this stands out as a favourite.
