I have been a Kernick fan since book one and have been looking forward to reading DEADLINE on my recent holiday. It didn't disappoint.
It's a fast-paced, well-characterised thriller, once again set around the grim streets and suburbs of London.
Right from page one, a Kernick trick I think, I was hooked. I read the book in a couple of days relaxing by the Pacific Ocean.
Twists and turns, a little bit of gut-wrenching violence, and a grandstand finish.
Mark Billingham has some serious competition !
Recommended.

. In Tearing Haste: Letters Between Deborah Devonshire and Patrick Leigh Fermor
City Travel Guides > Books > English
by: Patrick Leigh Fermor, The Duchess of Devonshire
September 04, 2008
Recently I went to see "Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging" in the cinema, but I hate seeing films I haven't read the book of. I had seen the trailer and thought it looked absolutly awesome! I quickly ordered the book from Amazon, and could not put it down! Honestly, I picked it up at 4 and did not stop reading until 8!! It is one of the best books in the world, and can only be out done in humour by the legend of Bridget Jones. It is fabulous book about very realistic problems faced by your average teenager, yet it isn't whingy or boring or moany, just hilarious and honest!! It doesn't blow anything out of proportions, like so much chick-lit does. Basically it is just fabulous!!

. The Return

I loved "The Island" and as soon as I had finished it I ordered "The Return". I found the parts about Sonia really boring and couldn't wait to get the the Spanish Civil War in Part 2. I didn't think the book "worked" and I doubted if I would even finish it. However, I perservered to the end and found it all very predictable. After "The Island", a very disappointing read.

. All the Colours of Darkness
City Travel Guides > Books > English
by: Peter Robinson
August 07, 2008
I thought his last book was a real clunker and had modest hopes for this one. The fact that I came back for more shows how much I had previously enjoyed Peter Robinson's books but this one, like the last, is a thinly plotted mess where the characters are just inserted into the plot willy nilly with no coherent reason other than that they are "old friends" or the like. It is becoming increasingly obvious that Mr R is relying on old fashioned impressions of Yorkshire and/or England and this novel doesn't ring true in any way (allowing that one needs to suspend disbelief in most crime fction to some extent). The police procedure is all wrong and this investigation just would not be allowed to carry on in this way. One last thing, like most contemporary ... Read More:

. The Great Gatsby (Penguin Popular Classics)
City Travel Guides > Books > English
by: F.Scott Fitzgerald

One of my resolutions for 2008 is to broaden my literary horizens. After studying English Lit to A-Level, my interest has fallen to the wayside. So on my quest to better myself through literature, I read "The Old Man and the Sea", which I just couldn't relate to. So imagine my relief when I started reading "The Great Gatsby". I'm so glad I perservered with classic books!
TGG is a great read. It's fast-paced from the outset, and gripping towards the end - I couldn't put it down. I even tried to convince family and friends to read it afterwards; but to no avail - so if I manage to get even ONE person to read it from writing this review, then good! Definitely recommended.

. Stick Man
City Travel Guides > Books > English
by: Julia Donaldson
September 01, 2008
Stick Man is an inspired and engaging character (descended I am sure from the cave-stick-man my children and I loved in The Gruffalo's Child). A stick is universally popular with small children so a little living stick couldn't fail to appeal to them. Stick Man's adventures mirror the many things for which children use their sticks. Mistaken for an ordinary stick, Stick Man is thrown to a dog, used as a Pooh-stick, put on a sandcastle as a flag, amongst other things, each time travelling further and further from his family tree. How will he get home?
Although the first half of the book is in bright sunshine colours, the winter kicks in and we have a sad shivering Stick Man and snowy pages. Stick Man ends up in the grate (a brief scary moment for the ... Read More:

. Blood River: A Journey to Africa's Broken Heart
City Travel Guides > Books > English
by: Tim Butcher
January 03, 2008
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I found it a great blend of interesting history and a fascinating insight into the modern-day Congo. I was genuinely gripped by the descriptions of the suffering going on there and horrified at my lack of awareness. The descriptions of his travel were secondary for me but were well-written and interesting. The only bits of the book that grated for me were his constant reminders of the dangers he was facing and the amount he was suffering which, on a backdrop of the Congolese people who were genuinely suffering and had no way of escape, felt unfair and over-stated. Other than that it was a great read nad I would highly recommend it.
