I am immensely puzzled by McCarthy's fame. I keep thinking I should love his books, but I just don't. People I admire and whose opinions I trust urge his books on me and I conclude that these people must be nuts. I managed to read All the Pretty Horses. Goodness, what a waste of time. I read about ten pages of No COuntry for Old Men, hoping desperately that it would grip me. No luck.

So, when I read the first few pages of The Road and instantly felt the kind of exhilaration I wanted to get from his other books, I bought it. Should have saved some cash and visited the local library. Set in a post-war Stalinist labour camp, this novel, as the title suggests, centres on a single day in the life of `political prisoner' Ivan Denisovich, from (before) sunrise to (well after) sunset. As one might imagine, Ivan has little to look forward to on this `typical' day in the camp; ultra sub-zero temperatures, horrendous food, forced labour, and incessantly picky guards all await him, and his fellow inmates. As harrowing as the day is though, this day actually turns out to be one of the `better' ones, which although bringing a little cheer to Ivan, leaves the reader puzzling (and more than a little shocked), over what must constitute a `bad' day in one of these places.

This will have been the last time I bought a Katie Fforde novel as hardback edition. Its predictable plot was not worth the extra expenditure and the sugary, dove-eyed cover illustration made we want to hide it. It really is a shame, but maybe I'm growing out of books like these.

This will have been the last time I bought a Katie Fforde novel as hardback edition. Its predictable plot was not worth the extra expenditure and the sugary, dove-eyed cover illustration made we want to hide it. It really is a shame, but maybe I'm growing out of books like these.

What can I say, I was a 30 a day man for 30 years read this book and have not touched a cig for 10 weeks now. I have the odd craving but they are easy to overcome. My advise is to buy it, read it and add a few years to your life.

I bought this book a couple of months ago and was really excited by it. However, it didn't work. Looking back, I think that was due to the following:
1) I'm not exactly a heffer, and I wasn't sure it would work for someone who many people describe as thin already, (but I knew I was carrying an extra 6 - 9 pounds and still had trouble finding clothes that felt and looked good)
2) I read the book when I was away with my hubby for the weekend, and we got drunk a lot and ate out a lot, and frankly, it's hard to figure out whether you're hungry or not when you're got a hang-over
3) I was training for a triathlon, and I think I kept thinking that a few days of hard training and being careful with my food would sort it all out anyway, so I kind of wasn't committed ... Read More:

I have never picked up a professional camera before, so books with aperture and white balance etc went straight over my head.

This book is great for someone new to digital photography who just wants to go out and take pictures that look great.

The book features allot of the basic equipment you will need to get started and a few prices to give a feel for things. It's nice to finally have a few comparisons of what to expect to pay depending on the quality of equipment. The book gives you the information on how to take different pictures and what to look for if your interested in the theory behind the different camera settings and how the equipment works.

I love this book; the romantic style of writing and stunning photography makes you want to travel immediately!
There is good coverage of the whole world, including a decent section on the UK, and includes a wide variety of experiences from hang-gliding in Rio de Janeiro to ghost-hunting in York, to camel riding in Oman, and it also includes festivals.
It is beautifully presented with stunning photography and has experiences arranged by country in the index which makes navigating the book easier. It also includes an appendix with a few lines of useful information about each experience, for example a website.

This book is not one that provides much practical information for planning a trip, but is perfect to give inspiration for where to go/what to do next!

I have literally just finished this book 10 minutes ago - i am a person that does not usually enjoy reading, i am a person that enjoys films and games. But i decided to buy this book, and what a fantastic decision that was.

This true story is exemplary, i am almost lost for words to describe this book, It is a supremely perfect balance of all out war, mixed in with feelings, emotions, descriptions. It all ties in perfectly, there is not a boring sentence in this book.
