. New Moon (Twilight Saga)
City Travel Guides > Books > English
by: Stephenie Meyer
September 06, 2007
Having read Twilight I was excited about reading 'New Moon'. I couldn't wait to get started. Like Twilight I found this book easy to get into and fast paced in most places, although there was a section of the book I found a bit slow and wanted to get it over with. That section for me was when Alice enters. Also there are parts in the book where Bella seems really immature, but then I have to remind myself that she's only supposed to be a teenager in the book, just a kid.
As I was reading the book I guessed about the whole Jacob thing, it was pretty predictable but I enjoyed it. I did feel sad for Jacob but I really missed Edward the most. It was well worth it though when he made his appearance in the book.
Near the end of this ... Read More:

. The General (CHERUB)
City Travel Guides > Books > English
by: Robert Muchamore
September 04, 2008
Robert Muchamore is an author who always delivers - until now!
The first in the Cherub series, The Recruit, had me hooked from the start on the adventures of child spy James Adams and his sister, Lauren. No other spy books - Alex Rider, Young James Bond, Jimmy Coates etc - could touch Cherub for quality, excitement or pure enjoyment.
However, I feel very let down by The General. Much of Muchamore's talent comes from creating believable and likeable characters, characters you invest your emotions in - characters you come to care about. In The General, however, he dwells less on the people and more on the action. His characters become cartoon-like, one-dimensional - with no real depth to them.
The story within The General is ... Read More:

. Doors Open
City Travel Guides > Books > English
by: Ian Rankin
September 16, 2008
"Bit quiet since you-know-who retired" says one copper half way through, so let's get 'him' out of the way! This book started strangely - by page 50 or so, I was convinced that Rankin, a supremely accomplished writer, was having me on. It's a spoof! Lavender Hill Mob meets Ocean's 11. Surely these guys can't be serious?!! In fact I came close to abandoning it BUT then something happened. Not just one event or a certain page but something a bit more gradual. Rankin was being serious after all. Yes, he's still commenting on social divides in Edinburgh, but on other things as well. His take on the aftermath of greed reminds me of the 'Pardoner's Tale' and his treatment of guilt Poe's story 'The Tell-Tale Heart' which interestingly is mentioned. After half way, I was hooked. Pretty good ... Read More:

. Carra: My Autobiography
City Travel Guides > Books > English
by: Jamie Carragher
September 11, 2008
I'm not a Manchester United supporter, but I read Alex Ferguson's autobiography, and enjoyed it. I'm not a Liverpool supporter, but I read Robbie Fowler's autobiography, and enjoyed it. I read Shane Warne's autobiography, but I'm certainly not an Australian. In short, I read a lot of autobiographies about sportsmen whose teams I have no allegiance to, and I read them without prejudice.
I suppose if you are a Liverpool supporter you might enjoy this book, but if you're not then don't bother, it wasn't written for your benefit anyway. Basically, Carragher does not have a good word to say about any one or anything outside the boundaries of Liverpool. Apparently he hated playing for England, hated even travelling to London, and doesn't feel even a passing allegiance to England. Well no wonder ... Read More:

. The Very Hungry Caterpillar [Board Book]
City Travel Guides > Books > English
by: Eric Carle
September 29, 1994
An infamous short tale of the caterpillar that munches its way through the edible obstacles on each page, until it becomes a butterfly. Arguably the most famous of the Eric Carle short stories, The Hungry Caterpillar symbolises the journeys things take in the world in order to accomplish something great. Themes in this book include the virtue of patience and the fact that things can sometimes take a surprising turn.
`The Hungry Caterpillar' shows all the great hallmarks of a young children's book, in that it easily lends itself to the curriculum and is as simple as it is equally open to in-depth interpretation. Possibilities of further learning include additional studies of phonics, links with food technology (fruits and their properties) and Art lessons, which could include the replication ... Read More:
