The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a great little book. It keeps my daughter occupied for hours on end. Just a quick flick through it is enough to convince any adult that a small child will like it. Simplistic, enjoyable and charming. And actually quite funny.
Well recommended for very small kids.

This is a gripping and well-written novel. I bought it on impulse in the airport and found it hard to put down. Harris' command of English is wonderful and witty with some delicate and poetic images, the story is fast-paced yet sensitive and with a brilliantly contrived set of twists.

This latest 44 Scotland Street novel doesn't disappoint except that it is just too difficult to make it last! Once finished, I, as usual, feel bereft - how many months will I have to wait for another in this series or, the equally enjoyable, Sunday Philosophy Club series? If only A McCall-Smith would concentrate on just these two series about wonderful Edinburgh! His subtle social comment and wonderful description of his characters draw the reader into this fascinating city and says a lot about life in the UK (sorry, Scotland) in 2008. Read ALL the books in the series in the order they were written and you will be hooked! MORE! MORE! MORE! soon, please.

One of the three main characters in this book is a sleight of hand specialist. Zal Innez previously appeared in the excellent `The Sacred Art of Stealing' alongside Angelique De Xavia, the policewoman who hunted him down, then let him escape because she loved him. His stagecraft is a metaphor for this book insofar as NOTHING is as it seems and author Christopher Brookmyre stuns us regularly throughout with a whole series of brilliant set-pieces of misdirection.

I thoroughly enjoyed this hysterical "romp" through two thousand years of British History; its well over 25 years since I was at school and was taught at lot of this in History lessons, but its amazing how much you forget or just didn't take in first time around.

John O'Farrell has taken his time and done his research and writes with such interest and humour that its probably the first time i've giggled out aloud whilst reading a history book! I absolutely recommend this book to anyone, its an easy read, not stuffy or pretentious and really brings alive the wonderful, rich history of our small but definitely not insignificant British Isles.....

Call me a philistine, but I cannot understand why this monumental and self-indulgent book, first published in 1962, is said to be one the great classics of the 20th century.

It charts the life of Anna Wulf, a writer. Although every page is very well written and the many characters are well individualized, I have found this quite a difficult read. The chapters in this massive tome are enormously long, with few natural breaks: at times there are whole pages between paragraphs.

And the structure of the book is, I think, excessively complex. Anna is a divorcee with a little daughter; her friend Molly is a divorcee with a grown-up son. Their story is told in five instalments. Both women are ex-communists; both believe themselves ... Read More:

I bought this book for holiday and if I had had anything else to do but read in the sun I would have binned it. The characters where drawn as cartoon stereotypes (too bad or too good) I didn't like any of the characters and the end was obvious from the beginning. First time I've read a Jackie Colllins reviewed book (or one of hers) - I won't again. The book ended up in bits in Greece!

This book started off really well, the characters were believable and the plot was interesting enough to get me hooked. When the plans for revenge were unfolded between the two women, I couldn't put the book down. I wanted to see what they were going to do to him and with each new drama, I was drawn further and further in as James' life unfolds dramatically around him with seemingly no idea who's behind it all. But then something odd happens, it's almost as if the author had a change of heart half way through because the story goes from this, to a less dramatic story of a woman getting over the break up of her marriage and moving on to a new relationship.
