I have read hundreds of books about the holocaust over the years and yet this book still managed to hold my attention - I could not put it down! The author has thoroughly researched his topic and gives an informative, detailed account of Operation Reinhard, the extermination of Polish Jewry. The book impartially details the full history of the 3 death camps, stories from the prisoners who were incarcerated there and the personnel who worked within them. This book is an absolute 'must read' as it accurately describes the extent of the perfectly oiled killing machine that was devoted to destroying a whole race of human beings. I was initially pleased to find this book as I had been trying for ages to find out about Phantom after reading about it in David Niven's autobiography, but this book was totally disappointing. Instead of an in depth look at Phantom the authors get lost in trying to write the history of World War 2 interspersed are snippets about Phantom but with no real information.

Whenever I review a book about U-Boats, I automatically think of (and usually mention) Gunther Prien and Otto Kretschmer. After having read this book, however, I think my first choice of name should have been Teddy Suhren.

Suhren was a legend within the U-Boat service during WW2 and this is his story. The detail comes from his own papers and photographs revealing a U-Boat commander who was incredibly successful. His own personal patrol range included the eastern coast of the United States as well as the Indian Ocean. What endears any reader to Suhren as a person, however, is not only his success, and outstanding leadership skills, but also his sense of humour and the fact that he was a rebel and often in trouble with his superiors.

An amazingly detailed account of the scope & horror of the event. For all the movies & documentaries about WWII they berely scratch the surface of the reality of warfare. If war's were told like this we may be more apprehensive about starting new ones. Seven million strong the Red Army had on the border of East Prussia prior to the invasion, that was the entire population of Australia at the time!

I owned this book and it is a true masterpiece i could not put it down then i lent the book out yo a friend who lost it but i have since repurchased th book, it relives those terrifiying hours and days in the water before being rescued it made me cry it is a MUST READ book Jill from Derby
