You cannot forget something which is little recognised as happening. The title is evocative, but 'unacknowledged' would be more accurate. This is essential reading for anyone who wants to know about the Polish war experience. That's all you need to know.

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Resistance: Translated by Barbara Mellor
.Resistance: Translated by Barbara Mellor
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: Agnes Humbert

May 04, 2009

When the German army invaded Paris in 1940, Agnes Humbert a strong minded, politically aware art historian, immediately knew that she had to 'do something', the thought of accepting the invasion was anathema to her and she helped to form one of the first organised groups of the French Resistance. The speed with which this was set up and began to operate was staggering. She had excellent contacts and friends in literary and journalistic circles and an underground newspaper, combating the German propaganda machine, was printed and circulated around Paris. It was simply amazing that they managed to keep this going and out of the hands of the authorities for nearly a year before they were betrayed and she was arrested and thrown into prison. Seven ... City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Himmler Brothers
.The Himmler Brothers
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: Katrin Himmler

July 20, 2007
Katrin Himmler has had the unfortunate experience of having Adolf Hitler's second in command, Heinrich Himmler as her Great Uncle. Throughout her life, her family have down-played the role of her own grandfather, Himmler's brother Ernst, who she was told, "went along with things" and was a very minor Nazi. However, over the last few years she has conducted an in-depth investigation into her family history, and the result is this excellent book.

Katrin Himmler begins by describing the childhood and youth of the three Himmler brothers, and the home life they had with their parents. They were by any account a fine family, the parents strict, but involved in every aspect of their sons' lives, and the three boys being in turn respectful of their ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Last Days of Hitler
.The Last Days of Hitler
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: Hugh Trevor-Roper

March 24, 1995
The fact that it was originally written in 1947 doesn't date this book at all, though the author's introduction to this 1997 edition does provide both a valuable update and a worthwhile reflection on the events recorded in the original text.

The author, Hugh Trevor-Roper, was the British intelligence officer who was sent to Berlin in June 1945 to investigate the disappearance of Hitler. I guess intelligence officers really were intelligent in those days because the book is brilliant, and every bit as exciting as a good detective story. In fact, if one could forget the awfulness of the Nazi system and the ghastliness of the characters that ran it, the book would pass as rather a good comedy thriller. One of its more delightful features is the way the author ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : End of the Beginning: From the Siege of Malta to the Victory at Alamein
.End of the Beginning: From the Siege of Malta to the Victory at Alamein
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: Phil Craig, Tim Clayton

June 09, 2003
The End of the Beginning covers World War II on the western European front from May 25 to November 10, 1942. It's written in almost novel form as it follows certain real people in the various theaters of the war, so it's not as dry as some history books can be. However, the effect of the writing is diluted by some of the varying topics the book covers, lessening the impact and bringing down the quality of the book.

Clayton and Craig have an easy-going style that draws the reader into it. The "characters" in the book come from all walks of life, from the British aristocracy to a nurse on the island of Malta to Winston Churchill himself. The authors spent a lot of time interviewing many of their subjects, while other parts of the narrative are taken from war diaries and previous ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Sobibor: A History of a Nazi Death Camp
.Sobibor: A History of a Nazi Death Camp
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: Jules Schelvis

July 26, 2007
This is a textbook about one of the three Nazi extermination camps. Jules Schelvis was one of the 18 Dutch Jews to survive his deportation (34000 fellow Dutchmen were sent there). It spurred him to write this factual and business like account of the history and running of the camp. It is not an easy read, and some of the details may not interest those who want a general overview. However, it's reliable and will help people to understand Israel's attitude to terrorists.
