City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Other Battle: Luftwaffe Night Aces Versus Bomber Command
.The Other Battle: Luftwaffe Night Aces Versus Bomber Command
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: Peter Hinchliffe

1995-10
Having been a navigator aboard a RAF heavy bomber during WWII and also being one of a very small percentage of crews to survive the horrifying experience of being shot down, Peter Hinchliffe is well qualified to write this beautifully reseached account of the night air war over Europe. Utilising resources from both sides, he strings together both personal accounts and general historic overviews to give a comprehensive picture of what RAF bomber crews and the Nachtjagd came to face in that increasingly technology-driven campaign.

Starting with the first tentative raids on German cities, which without wishing to degrade the efforts or the bravery of the crews, were ridiculously inaccurate,he divides the war up into a sort of series ... Read More:

.The Black Bull: From Normandy to the Baltic with the 11th Armoured Division
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: Patrick Delaforce

An enjoyable and reliable history of an armoured division in the ETO 1944-1945. Neither Jingo-istic nor biaised, it is an account of average men at war, overcoming awesome obstacles, namely the supremely led, and usually better equipped Germans forces in the west. It makes no excuses for when battles go wrong, and names the heroes which deserve a mention. Thoroughly recommended.

From the moment I started reading this book, I could not put it down. The standard of research that has gone in the book is excellent, as are the numerous photographs of the bombed, defensive and launch sites. If you are interetsed in books about WW2, then buy this book. (I have read enough books about WW2 to know a good book when I read one, and this is one.) Possibly of special interest are the maps showing where every missile that made land, finally fell - Did one land near you live? If there is one aspect to the book that appears initially 'poor', it's the cover; don't let that put you off, it is well worth reading.

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Kristallnacht: Prelude to Destruction
.Kristallnacht: Prelude to Destruction
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: Martin Gilbert

August 06, 2007
On November 7 1938, a 17 year old German Jew, Herschel Grynszpan, enraged by the suffering of his parents, who had been expelled from Germany together with 12 000 other Jews, walked into the German embassy in Paris and shot junior German diplomat Ernst vom Rath, who died three days later.
Vom Rath's assassination sparked what the Nazis had been planning for months, a nationwide pogrom and orgy of destruction against the Jews, across the Third Reich (Germany, Austria and Sudetenland).
On on November 8 it had been announced that Jewish children could no longer attend "Aryan" state elementary schools, something that had hitherto been allowed where there were not sufficient Jewish elementary schools. At the same time all Jewish cultural ... Read More:

City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: Alistair Horne, David Montgomery

April 21, 1995
After his famous victory over Rommel at El Alamein in 1942, Montgomery was appointed Chief of Land Forces for the Allied invasion of Normandy in 1944. The Supreme Allied Commander was General Eisenhower. This book traces that final campaign from it's beginnings in London (January 1944), across the English Channel (June 1944) and the long march north eastwards across France, Belgium and Holland to the climax at Lüneberg Heath in May 1945 where Montgomery received Germany's surrender.

Working in conjunction with Montgomery's only son David, author Alistair Horne brings a fresh approach to what was, for many people, the longest year of all time as the allied forces fought battle after battle on their way to bringing the War in Europe to an ... Read More:
