City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Explaining Hitler
.Explaining Hitler
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: Ron Rosenbaum

June 24, 1998
How did Hitler come to be such an evil person? Ron Rosenbaum explores the different ways that people have attempted to answer this question over the past 80 years. Was Hitler abused as a child? Was he insane? Was his hatred of the Jews fuelled by a fear that he might himself be of Jewish descent? Some of those whom Rosenbaum consults on these questions are sure they have the answers; others believe that it is impossible to answer the question of how Hitler came to be so evil, or even that it is wrong to try and answer it because any explanation may be seen as some kind of an excuse for Hitler’s actions. By exploring so many different views of Hitler, Rosenbaum produces a far more compelling and intriguing work than if he had simply presented ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Introducing the Holocaust (Introducing...)
.Introducing the Holocaust (Introducing...)
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: Haim Bresheeth, Stuart Hood

May 01, 2000
As far as holocaust books go, this is a suitable introductory survey. On the back of the book it rather ambitiously claims that it is trying to dissolve the myths of the holocaust, but to be frank I can't see how that is done.

Basically, it is a re-telling of the events that led up to the holocaust, and the holocaust itslef, with some artwork aswell.

The artwork I feel was added in order to give the book a " different " apperance, and as such it is perhpas targeted at a less accademic, or perhaps younger audience. I feel however that it is not needed or helpful, and if anything just provides an excuse for a lack of in depth text.

It is not a bad book, by any means- but it is not groundbreaking or inspiring either. ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Resistance: Translated by Barbara Mellor
.Resistance: Translated by Barbara Mellor
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: Agnes Humbert

May 04, 2009

When the German army invaded Paris in 1940, Agnes Humbert a strong minded, politically aware art historian, immediately knew that she had to 'do something', the thought of accepting the invasion was anathema to her and she helped to form one of the first organised groups of the French Resistance. The speed with which this was set up and began to operate was staggering. She had excellent contacts and friends in literary and journalistic circles and an underground newspaper, combating the German propaganda machine, was printed and circulated around Paris. It was simply amazing that they managed to keep this going and out of the hands of the authorities for nearly a year before they were betrayed and she was arrested and thrown into prison. Seven of the ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Himmler Brothers
.The Himmler Brothers
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: Katrin Himmler

July 20, 2007
Katrin Himmler has had the unfortunate experience of having Adolf Hitler's second in command, Heinrich Himmler as her Great Uncle. Throughout her life, her family have down-played the role of her own grandfather, Himmler's brother Ernst, who she was told, "went along with things" and was a very minor Nazi. However, over the last few years she has conducted an in-depth investigation into her family history, and the result is this excellent book.

Katrin Himmler begins by describing the childhood and youth of the three Himmler brothers, and the home life they had with their parents. They were by any account a fine family, the parents strict, but involved in every aspect of their sons' lives, and the three boys being in turn respectful of their parents ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Berlin: the Downfall, 1945
.Berlin: the Downfall, 1945
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: Antony Beevor

April 25, 2002
While I had not read Beevor's prequel to this book, Stalingrad, I nonetheless found his account of the final days of Berlin engaging. Beevor skillfully tells the tale of the rivalries between the Russian generals as they vie for the prize of conquering the Third Reich first and bit by bit chronicles the advances of Russian soldiers towards the German capital. This is a very detailed account of the Russian side of the war and as such readers will need to persevere. Ultimately though a very rewarding read.

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Last Days of Hitler
.The Last Days of Hitler
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: Hugh Trevor-Roper

March 24, 1995
The fact that it was originally written in 1947 doesn't date this book at all, though the author's introduction to this 1997 edition does provide both a valuable update and a worthwhile reflection on the events recorded in the original text.

The author, Hugh Trevor-Roper, was the British intelligence officer who was sent to Berlin in June 1945 to investigate the disappearance of Hitler. I guess intelligence officers really were intelligent in those days because the book is brilliant, and every bit as exciting as a good detective story. In fact, if one could forget the awfulness of the Nazi system and the ghastliness of the characters that ran it, the book would pass as rather a good comedy thriller. One of its more delightful features is the way the author treats ... Read More:
