Corrie Ten Boom is a 50 something spinster from a strong Christian family that lived in Holland during the second world war. The faith of the whole family is tested as they find themselves caught up in the adventure of the Dutch underground.

This is a book that I would recommend to anyone. It is a really easy read and an inspiring book that I was unable to put down.

A great account of a Chapter in WW2. Max has researched this period at the end of the war with his usual professionalism and has written a great account of the the history of the 2nd Panzer Division's last days and the Resistance's efforts to impede their advance.
A great read as usual from Mr Hastings.

Churchill had been wrong so many times before on every issue that he touched, so the fact that he was made British Prime Minister, at a very dark hour in British history, was in itself amazing. The reason that he was given the role was that it was obvious that a strong leader was needed. It was his ability to turn a very sceptical Conservative party, a divided cabinet and a fearful country around to the idea that they, and they on their own, could fight on. These were the five days that shaped British history. The book is a well written account of how a very significant decision was made through the efforts of one man. I've read a lot of Holocaust books that describe the terror and atrocities of the concentration camps,but I found this book very unusual in that despite Hetty being at the same time and place as the other victims,one turn of fate after another leads to her narrowly escaping all the worst horrors of WWII and surviving relatively unscathed right on the edge of it all.
Hetty's wonderful strong caring character shines through in this book making this a less bleak read than most other Holocaust autobiographies,but still as poignant.

As an armchair tanker I got all I could ask for, and then some. The small scale tactics and other aspects of day to day operations are described in detail. The photos are plenty and very interesting.

Since the Germans allegedly where so superior the reader is left wondering why they lost the war.

To put a greater pespective on the subject read Heinz Guderian: Panzerleader. That book will tell you - from the horses own mouth - how the Germans lost it all.

I studied history but now I'm just looking for straight forward enjoyable narrative history. This is a well researched, well written book. However, I'm finding it very hard to work my way through, and often I've read a whole page without paying any attention to it as it is so dense and detailed. I would recommend this book if you are studying this at university, but if you want some bedside reading, think twice about it. The section on resistance is very good though.

I found this little book extremely helpful, for both teachers and students. It covers all the main topics but is not intended as a core text - the narratives for each chapter last barely a page (though these might function as an excellent aid to last-minute revision). Rather, Lee includes discursive essays on one or two points of controversy within each field (economy, foreign policy, oppoisiton etc). As usual he is clear and balanced in summarising the views of others, but not afraid to suggest his own thoughts, which he pithily expresses. There are also source questions, including some model answers - a real boon. Invaluable for A-Level and forthcoming A2 courses.

This is truly a life-changing book. I first read it in the early seventies and have re-read it many times since. Truth and wisdom shine through these pages, which address the question of how you can find it in your heart to forgive those who have wronged you. Opening herself to the love of God enabled Corrie to do things which (humanly) seemed impossible. She and her family suffered terribly at the hands of the Nazis but there is no bitterness in her book, only sadness and hope.

The companion to Tigers in Combat I, volume II is the completion of Schneider's history of the units and formations equipped with the Tiger tank. The approach is the same as volume I, with the chronology of each regiment presented, supported by some superb photographs. The book is completed by details of regiment equipment, organisation, camouflage and markings. A section of excellent colour illustrations by Jean Restayn provides those interested in armour modelling with ideas aplenty. Overall, a superb book, which I highly recommend.
