. Hitler, 1936-1945: Nemesis (Allen Lane History)
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: Ian Kershaw
October 05, 2000
What can be said about this book that hasn't already been said? When partnered with it's counterpart, 1889-1936: Hubris, this represents the best, most definitive account of Hitler. The scale and scope of both of these books is tremendous, and covers every detail about his life in an exhaustively researched & accurate way.
Some reviewers have given negative reviews on this book, but these are mainly in relation to the military and events of the second world war. As Kershaw states in the introduction to these books, they are not an account of the second world war and how certain battles faired. As he states, there is already an exhaustive amount of work in relation to these out there, and besides, this is a book about Hitler, not what ... Read More:

. Anti-Semitism and the Holocaust (Access to History In Depth)
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: Alan Farmer
April 06, 1998
This is a superb resource for any student studying A-level history and in particular anyone who needs help in a question along the lines of who was the main instigator of the Final Solution. After using thissource to help with my coursework i believe i got an A or B. All quotes were attributed to the author via footnotes. What i liked abpout this book was that there was limited opinionistic interpretation throughout except, of course at the very end when the author makes his own conclusion. What also impressed me was the fact that even though i read the conclusion of Mr Farmer i didnt come to the same one. This shows how unbiased the author writes.
Throughout the book there are numerous sub chapters that focus on a particular group or person and how they conributed ... Read More:

. Five Days in London: May 1940 (Yale Nota Bene)
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: J Lukacs
September 03, 2001
Churchill had been wrong so many times before on every issue that he touched, so the fact that he was made British Prime Minister, at a very dark hour in British history, was in itself amazing. The reason that he was given the role was that it was obvious that a strong leader was needed. It was his ability to turn a very sceptical Conservative party, a divided cabinet and a fearful country around to the idea that they, and they on their own, could fight on. These were the five days that shaped British history. The book is a well written account of how a very significant decision was made through the efforts of one man. He may have been wrong on everything else but he was right on the one thing that really mattered for Britain and indeed Europe, Hitler.

. Brothers in Battle: Best of Friends
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: William Guarnere, Edward Heffron
October 10, 2007
A great read that fills in the blanks left by the Band of brothers book and tv series.
Political correctness takes a back seat and Bill and Babe say it as it was.
I felt that more could have been detailed about the different firefights which occured (especially on the Normandy drop.)
Bill touches on this very lightly by saying he was named Wild Bill after killing many Germans on D Day.
However, he doesn't go into any more detail other than admitting that he 'executed' two SS soldiers (on D Day) who had surrendered to him with a bullet to the back of their heads. (He then goes on to say that he has no regrets and feels no pain or sorrow fot killing them. (How many people would admit that in their book ?)
Been a Brit I didn't really ... Read More:

. Hitler: A Study in Tyranny
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: Alan Bullock,Baron Bullock
November 29, 1990
The original edition of this book was published in 1952,just seven years after Hitler's suicide in the Berlin bunker. What is astonishing is that it has stood the test of time and is still one of the best Hitler biographies around.
It is not a history of Nazi Germany, and so some topics that you may have expected to be covered in depth(the Holocaust, for example)are skimmed over in favour of the life and times of Hitler.
I would recommend, for new readers, reading the middle chapter first. This is an attempt to sum up his personality-the man, rather than the history maker. It's judgements are so well put("Pity and mercy he regarded as humanitarian claptrap")that it will set you up for the chronological chapters that precede and follow it.
Even though there are now veritable ... Read More:

. Russia's War
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: R.J. Overy
July 29, 1999
Russia's War by R.J. Overy is a very good and detailed account of how the Soviet Union managed against the odds at times to not only stop the Germans but eventually repulse them. It also offers analysis, arguments and conclusions that are different. It is fast-paced and very interesting and until I read the description I would never have guessed it was that long because it is such an interesting read. All in all it is a very good book.
