Whenever I review a book about U-Boats, I automatically think of (and usually mention) Gunther Prien and Otto Kretschmer. After having read this book, however, I think my first choice of name should have been Teddy Suhren.

Suhren was a legend within the U-Boat service during WW2 and this is his story. The detail comes from his own papers and photographs revealing a U-Boat commander who was incredibly successful. His own personal patrol range included the eastern coast of the United States as well as the Indian Ocean. What endears any reader to Suhren as a person, however, is not only his success, and outstanding leadership skills, but also his sense of humour and the fact that he was a rebel and often in trouble with his superiors. ... I thought that the author's "Lancaster Pilot" was one of the best books about air in the war that i have read.This is the third book in the trilogy.Whilst it is a very good read it is not quite as good as the other 2 and that is because despite his protestations he was not returned to active duty after his tour finished,He became an instructor,then a glider pilot and finally flew Mosquitos on weather trips,virtually unopposed over enemy territory.So that insecurity which permeates the first 2 books is not there.In fact life became slightly routine for him.So although not quite up to the standard of the first 2 this is still an absorbing study of the RAF in the last year of the war

It doesn't get more authentic than oral history, events told by those who participated.
However, it requires proper veterans or documents to be taken into account and this is what Nastable fails to achieve.
Instead, he takes quotes from Soviet sources which never served anything other than communist propaganda purposes. Not only are these sources then (mis)taken for a fact, but he refers to them heavily when painting his black and white picture of Stalingrad. Sentences such as "it was a rare German officer who would show mercy to a Russian" show that Bastable not only has an amateurish knowledge and completely biased view on the war in Russia - it makes the reader wonder if he has ever spoken to a war veteran, German or Russian, in person. ... The men and women of Bletchley Park, who repeatedly broke German military cyphers throughout the Second World War, made an incalculable contribution to the allied success. This book, written by one of the code-breakers provides a fascinating insight into the process.

Despite the core subject, this is not really a book about cryptography, but about how to manage people and technology to solve complex, important problems. Welchman was the "glue" between the pure ideas men like Alan Turing, and the code-breaking production line. His talents were clearly in building the organisation, and liaising between the different parties so that interception, decoding, understanding and using the intelligence became a repeatable success.

I believe that anyone reading this book with desire to validate prejudices or confirm suspicions that Harris was a butcher will be disappointed. I feel that the author perhaps had three purposes - in order of priority; (i) to outline the character, abilities and achievements of the man, (ii) to describe the background of war-time Britain and the RAF, and (iii) to accurately outline the chronology and context of the whole bomber war.
Probert achieves his aims. This is a first class read, scholarly but not dry, it is at times vaguely (and welcomingly) conversational in tone. He has clearly researched his subject well. I'm sure there was a mystery behind Olga's success in staying in Germany during the war, despite being a Russian (albeit of German extraction). And somehow her family survived at a time when even to surrender to the Germans was tantamount to a death sentence.
But the author didn't really come up with any answers as to why they all survived. He hints there may have been things going on under the surface, but can't shed any light on them. I finished the book thinking that it had more been a log of their lives rather than any explanation. A little frustrating!
