. Lincolnshire Airfields in the Second World War
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: Patrick Otter
October 31, 1996
What an amazing place Otter's Lincolnshire proves to be. Many tales of heroism, stupidity and dead airmen and the impact of servicemen and women from all over the globe on wartime Lincolnshire. It's cleverly organised in every respect bar one. The map numbering the airfields (to which one wishes to refer often as the story unfolds)should use the same numbers as the chapters for each airfield, but doesn't. That makes for complications that should have been avoided. Otherwise this is a stirring and important work on the war years that leaves one wishing for more narrative about the impact on the local civil population. Perhaps Otter could do that next...

. Five Days in London: May 1940 (Yale Nota Bene)
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: J Lukacs
September 03, 2001
Churchill had been wrong so many times before on every issue that he touched, so the fact that he was made British Prime Minister, at a very dark hour in British history, was in itself amazing. The reason that he was given the role was that it was obvious that a strong leader was needed. It was his ability to turn a very sceptical Conservative party, a divided cabinet and a fearful country around to the idea that they, and they on their own, could fight on. These were the five days that shaped British history. The book is a well written account of how a very significant decision was made through the efforts of one man. He may have been wrong on everything else but he was right on the one thing that really mattered for Britain and indeed Europe, ... Read More:

. Nuremberg: Evil on Trial
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: James Owen
April 05, 2007
This book is an excellent, unprejudiced account of the events leading up to and surrounding the Nuremberg trials. It details the strategies and arguments used by the Allied Powers in bringing the remaining figureheads and quasi-figureheads of the Nazi command to justice, through the use of memoirs and transcripts of the individuals involved in the proceedings as well as giving excellent insight into the emotional and mental states of the accused from denial of involvement in the various charges faced in the court to resignation of death through said memoirs. The author has researched this book very well and it is evident in the balanced approach that has been taken to describe the arguments used by both prosecution and defence. In addition to this, ... . Berlin Intelligence Map
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
from: After the Battle
2001-01
To understand the Russians of today it's essential to understand what their parents and grandparents went through under Stalin and especially during what they call the Great Patriotic War. Leningrad and Stalingrad are iconic names. Moscow is on the same plane of courage and brutality. Rodric Braithwaite brings both vividly to life in the clarity of his exposition and his use of first hand accounts.

. Inferno: The Devastation of Hamburg, 1943
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: Keith Lowe
February 28, 2008
For those like myself and many reviewers below, influenced during our childhood by a simple view of the war as a heroic victory, this is a sobering book. Whilst describing the most unimaginable suffering, Lowe is careful to avoid blame. He remains dispassionate, even-handed, always at pains to see the bombers' point of view alongside that of the bombed, and remaining commendably forgiving towards everyone. In an intelligent analysis of the aftermath he concludes that at least the German people "have learnt their lesson", accepting their heavy burden of guilt. He could perhaps have added that had they won, which they very nearly did, they would presumably have felt no more guilty than Maggie Thatcher after the Falklands. Such are the vagaries of human nature to ... Read More:

. Most Secret War (Coronet Books)
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: R.V. Jones
June 21, 1990
Everything that has been said in the reviews about this book are true but I feel do not say enough about the man, who Churchill said in his memoirs, saved Britain. He was well known in war time intelligence circles as being strong willed and maybe this is why he was treated so shabbily by this country even after Baroness Thatcher called him out of retirement during the Falklands War. On the other hand the Americans recognised what a great man he was and the CIA in the 1990's announced they were using his name for some sort of training exercise, I believe. Basically his treatment by this wonderful country mirrored Frank Whittle's.

. The Greatest Battle: The Battle for Moscow, 1941-2
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: Andrew Nagorski
September 01, 2008
I purchased THE GREATEST BATTLE because of a general interest in World War II and particularly its turning points. I didn't read beforehand a synopsis or reviews of the book and thus wasn't disabused of the notion that its vantage point was that of the units fighting on the ground, perhaps at the army, corps and brigade levels. This preconception proved to be a misconception, though not one fatal to my subsequent appreciation of this narrative about Germany's attempt to capture Moscow.
THE GREATEST BATTLE is rather a Big Picture overview of the largest armed clash of WWII beginning well before Hitler's invasion of the U.S.S.R. to April 1942, considered by military consensus to be the end of the battle. It is, as the subtitle suggests, more about Hitler vs. Stalin and ... Read More:
