Geert Mak's book is a masterpiece. It's not a complete and exhaustive account of the 20th Century in Europe, instead it reads in the form of a travelogue as Mak visits some of the significant places upon which events took place, for example Sarajevo and Berlin. It's not a dry and dusty recounting of facts, instead it's a warm and readable insight into some of the people and events which were so pivotal for the history of Europe. Somehow he is able to find vignettes of events which illustrate the whole, interviewing people who, although unnoticed players in history, have their own insight into the events and their own experiences of how things affected them.

The best guide to the NW waterways ever. OK so the T&M isn't there in full, but then it's not exclusively a NW waterway or in the Pennines. The sheer wealth of detail both of maps and of navigational help, as well as that pertaining to local amenities is outstanding. One of the best things Nicholsons did was to introduce the spiral binding to a formerly thick and unwieldy book. This volume will lie flat on the boat roof, sit nicely in your pocket. I use it a lot - and I'm a walker!!

If you are sailing on the Norfolk Broads, this is the only map you need. Excellent quality and excellent value. Covers both North and South Broads and shows all moorings, pubs etc.

Took my fiance to Paris recently and bought this book for the trip.
Have always been impressed when I've taken one of the Lonely Planet guides on my travels, and this book maintained the high standards that I've come to expect from them.
Doesn't matter if you know a bit about where you are visiting or if you are completely clueless - everything you could need to know is in here.
Well written, easy to use, full of useful information, and yet small enough to fit in a coat pocket.
Highly recommend.

Haha, it really is incredible - I never thought I'd find some of the best places to eat for less than a fortune in such a small book like that, but apparently I did. It is ridiculously easy to find the kind of place you want to eat (cheapest, closest to you, a certain cuisine etc), and the reviews consist of opening/closing hours, special menus, the highlights of the place, and critique on the food, service and location. It's incredible how accurate they are :) Definitely worth the buy.

I found this Bradt travel guide more comprehensive and accurate than many of the Lonely Planet or Rough Guides I've purchased in the past. The author seems genuinely interested in the country and I enjoyed reading the funny accounts of his experiences - both good and bad. The Practical Information section is particularly useful (I did't realise I needed vaccinations to visit Croatia until I'd read this!)

I highly recommend this book.

It is full of colourful diagrams, maps, pictures, routes and valuable tips that made my holiday planning to England most enjoyable and easy.

It is well organised into regions and the introduction information on the history, culture and architecture of England are great.

You will enjoy reading this book even if not visiting England.
