This is a good guide book, as all the guide books in the series, but I did expect a bit more from it. I travelled around Italy together with my husband the summer of 2005, and we used this guide book a lot. But it is a guide book, nothing more. There are quite a bit of things that have changed since the book was last edited, but this is expected. We are planning to send the findings we did to the editor, so that it can be added or changed in the next edition, perhaps.
We felt that the book focused too much on churches, castles etc, and a lot of really interesting things were missed - like the local food markets, which we love to visit. There wasn't much of "different" or "special" recommendations, it was just focusing on the "What to see ... Read More:

An aimless and tedious meander through British life as seen from an outsider's point of view. Some of this book is very funny but it is full of pointless anecdotes and inane drivel. This book is too long and much of it is instantly forgettable. Not good!

When my book came through the post and flicked through the pages, I actually started juming about and screaming!!! The pictures are so amazing. I was in so much excitement about the holiday I am going on this summer. I am going cycle touring in France, and this book is going to become my bible. Infact I was so impressed by it, I planned my whole route so that I could pick up as many campsites as possible. Trust me, the campsites are totally stunning, well thats if you think stunning is beautiful, rural, and peaceful campsites with breath taking views!

Needing to clear some space on my bookshelves I have decided to reacquaint myself with Bill Bryson's travel books before Bookcrossing them.
This one was written in 1990, first published in 1992 and the edition on my bookshelf in 1998. I enjoyed reading this travelogue of his tour of some of the major cities of Europe, many of those mentioned which I have visited myself during the last forty years. Of those that I have not I think that Sofia in particular may well have changed beyond recognition, Eastern Europe having undergone the most changes in the last eighteen years.
Whilst one might not always agree with Bryson's viewpoint it is none the less an amusing read, though one must also accept that in some aspects it can seem very dated.

I was initially sceptical about the purpose of this book - I kept thinking, is this just a fantastic marketing exercise, an extended advertisement for a beautiful boutique place in France, something I could find in one of the glossy foodie or travel mags? And in a way, yes - but it is so much more, and so beautifully and engagingly done that I have completely succombed to its many charms. It really is the stuff of dreams - only these guys really did it, and did it with great success. It is a gorgeously put-together book, with seductive recipes - I salivate just reading them through, the mark of a favourite cookbook in the making for me. The Collins Phrase books (I have used several of the new editions including French, Spanish and Italian while travelling around Europe) are great. They are easily navigable with colour coding for different sections - all the essentials you need for getting by on holiday - shopping, using transport, accommodation, top tips - my favourite bit though, and that which I couldn't do with out, is the awesome menu reader! By far my favourite part of the any holiday is eating and the format is nice and compact so can fit in your handbag/purse easily. They're really discreet for bringing out at the dinner table, pretty much fitting in your hand, and avoiding the truly obvious tourist look! They're good and cheap too so I will be picking one up for any relevant country I visit.

I have read this book twice! This book will tell you all you need to know about Venice. Its well written which makes it an easy read, so many books have been written on Venice, but one is clear and broken down into key sections.

This is a brilliant boxed set, i managed to get this for under £45 which is incredible given the books individually are priced at £13 each !!

The attention to detail in these books are second to none - buy it now before the price goes back up !!

This is the second lonely planet book that I have bought, the first being south East Asia which I found invaluable. The book is a little big not exactly pocket size BUT it can answers nearly everything you need to know without giving too much away so you still get the adventure. Packed full of places to see, phone numbers, where to go for emergency help. Ratings for hostels and much more

All in all this is a great book and I am looking forward to using it later this year when I go travelling Spain & France on my Motorbike.
