This is a beautiful book, worthy of pride-of-place on your coffee table or your library shelf. If you're a "map person," you will relish hundreds of illustrations published between the covers. These generously-sized images give you a real opportunity to pore over the details on historical maps, and the accompanying text will teach you something new.
It is an ambitious undertaking to publish a book like this, and Simon Foxell has certainly done justice to his topic. From the famous (eg Hollar's Panorama) to the obscure, the maps are presented in full colour with extended captions. This is probably the best Rough Guide I've ever used and there have been many!

It really is all you need to find your way round this dazzling country,at least for a first visit.
Wales is surely a land of contrasts but if you make this guide your companion there should be few surprises.
As ever it is very strong on arrival,accommodation and restaurants although we did experience an unpleasant restaurant in Conwy it was for the most part extremely reliable.

The maps of town centres are invaluable and make sure you find time to read the history section before you go.

First and foremost this is a very well written book. The characterisation is superb, and the way the author describes the way that she slowly gets drawn into rural Mallorcan life is nothing short of enchanting.

However perhaps the most accomplished part of the book is the way that the author views her other life in the PR business in London.

As someone who loves to read the stories of people who have moved to rural Spain and Mallorca it is this flitting back and forth between the author's previous life in London and new life in Mallorca that makes the book both unique and captivating.

Highly recommended.

I could have almost been in the Black Forest with the wonderful descriptions.

I could have almost been in the Black Forest with the wonderful descriptions.

I have emailed my appreciation to Mr Mole because this book is absolutely wonderful and transported me from the dour days of Devon back into the the Greece that my husband & I love so much.
John took me into his home and family: and shared his Greek experiences with a humour that I am at one with - even my husband laughed aloud reading this treasure of a book.
I only read it last week and I am re - reading it already as it has such an amazing feel-good factor to it. (I might add that I don't read that many books here - usually holidays are my time for reading !!)

I'm planning to walk over the Pyrenees from Catalonia to the Midi this summer, and was looking for a good resource to give me a well-informed idea of possible starting points, finishes, distances and the natural obstacles involved.

Although the Rough Guide was slagged off somewhat by previous reviewers for being a) too big to be properly useful as a hiking guide, and b) too useful specifically for hikers (there's no pleasing some people!), I'm glad to say that it's perfect for me - I'm not going to take it on the trip, but I'll be siphoning every little bit of information from it while planning.

Haha, it really is incredible - I never thought I'd find some of the best places to eat for less than a fortune in such a small book like that, but apparently I did. It is ridiculously easy to find the kind of place you want to eat (cheapest, closest to you, a certain cuisine etc), and the reviews consist of opening/closing hours, special menus, the highlights of the place, and critique on the food, service and location. It's incredible how accurate they are :) Definitely worth the buy.

I went to Madeira for 3 days and took this guide and I'm glad I did it. It focus more on Funchal but with so litle time its ideal to plane the days and not waste one second of time.

It also makes a great quick reference to the hit points like top 10 local dishes, top 10 gardens, top 10 beaches, top 10 warnings etc.

It has great info about all the best places and I found the bus information the most usefull for people like me, who wanted to save money but enjoy the trip at the same time. It has lots of pictures of what to expect, usefull information about the island, info on prices, small maps and the best locations and monuments: the very best top 10 of places you just have to visit while in Madeira, places like The Catedral of funchal, ...
