Christopher's latest is a beautiful book to paw over and dip in and out of. The pictures are evocative and inspiring, and the text just takes you there.

Great to keep in your car so that you always have something interesting to deviate off to when your on a journey. The format reminds me of a more lavish version of the old AA or RAC map/guide books that your Dad used to keep in the glove box and I loved to read as a boy.

Just got this as a Christmas present for someone, and looking through, it makes a very interesting read, with lots of unusual and entertaining nuggets of information and facts. The illustrations are good too.

However I was a bit disappointed to find 3 mistakes in the space of as many pages when I looked at my own local area (Suffolk), which could have been corrected by anyone with Google and an extra 30 seconds to check each one... It was Sir Robert Watson-Watt who was instrumental in the development of RADAR at Bawdsey just before WW2 (not Robin), it's the River Deben (not Debden), and Grimston Hall is in Trimley St Martin (not the adjacent parish of Trimley St Mary). Which just makes me slightly question the veracity of the rest ... Read More:

Only that it's good, has clear mapping and lots of detailed information. It has a ring binding, which I like as this enables you to keep the book open at the desired page without damaging it. It also has a complete index of towns and villages at the back, and each of the city centre maps has its own street index - very useful. Not to mention the small scale route planning map and the map of administrative departments. What more could you need? And it's just about small enough to fit in your glove compartment. So if it seems a little heavy, unwieldy and difficult to navigate at times, well, France is a lot bigger than England.

I love this book; I really do. Not only is there a whole wealth of interesting USEFUL information about every member country of Europe for travellers, but there's also a background on the continent, including its history, cultures, religions, currencies and loads more.

Excellent organisation means finding the information you want about a country is easy and the way the information is brought across in an energetic and exciting manner that really gets your juices flowing as it were.

Hell I read this book even if I'm not planning to go to the country in question just because is so interesting to read and at over 1200 pages you will definitely get your money's worth out of it.

I write as a cook who enjoys actually reading cookery books, not just cooking from them.
In comparision with Tessa's other books this one has turned out to be less enjoyable. The publishers should take note: The simple fact that the ingredients are not arranged vertically makes it more difficult to grasp the recipe as a whole, it's not as amusing when just flicking through the book for inspiration!
I don't know why but it does give the impression that Tessa hurried through Portugal just to write this book, there's no soul to it if one could say that.
That said, the book as a whole is beautifully published, the photographs amazing and I have tried Pasteis de Nata, very good!

A travelogue with a difference, or at least a fridge.

Or 'My self absorbed travels around various pubs in Ireland whilst trying to get my leg over'.

Hawks shows virtually no interest in the country he is visiting (he leaves the 'deeply spiritual' place he feels 'honoured' to be visiting to go to the pub (surprise) to watch a football match. (The photo's included in the book are of the fridge, cars and pubs, there is 1 - yes one, photo of some scenery)

His attitude is 'me, me, me' all the the way throuh, which to be honest might not be so bad if Hawks were a pleasant companion but unfortuantley he comes accross as an uninformed, patronising, buffoon. His 'jokes' are painfull (especially towards the end of the book ... Read More:

I loved my stay at Barcelona, I tried to cramm in as much as I can in 3 days so I got 3 travel guides and this was one of them.

It contains 3 important maps: A map of Barcelona, a map of the gothic quarter, and a subway map. These maps are clear and well detailed.

By using the top 10 guides I managed to plan out all the must see places and the best places to eat - I definitely recommend the sagrada famiia. + there are top ten guides for each district so you can find out what is near you.

Out of the guides I have seen, this and the AA one are easily the best.

This is a good guide book, as all the guide books in the series, but I did expect a bit more from it. I travelled around Italy together with my husband the summer of 2005, and we used this guide book a lot. But it is a guide book, nothing more. There are quite a bit of things that have changed since the book was last edited, but this is expected. We are planning to send the findings we did to the editor, so that it can be added or changed in the next edition, perhaps.
We felt that the book focused too much on churches, castles etc, and a lot of really interesting things were missed - like the local food markets, which we love to visit. I have lived in London a few years now, and I love being able to find the really interesting and off the wall things to do in this fab city. I bought this book for a friend, and then spent the next 2 days buried in it myself, and I started to write down ideas to take back to me. After 5 pages of my notes on the book, I decided it would be far simpler to get myself a copy!
it lists everything from places to eat, to museums you'cve probably never heard of, together with lots of free activities and it isn't expecially aimed at tourists which is refreshing. A really different take on London and I'm a big fan.
