. Iceland (Lonely Planet Country Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: Fran Parnell
May 01, 2007
My husband and I spent 4 days driving the south of Iceland in August 2007 and this book was great. The maps were spot on and the recommendations were spot on. We particularly loved the lobster soup at the Saegreifinn restuarant in Reykjavik and tried the whale meat kebab. Using this guide and the recommendations in it, we managed to go dog sledding, snow mobiling and whale watching. The only thing we missed was seeing Puffins, however they apparently left 2 weeks before we arrived, so we can't put that blame on the guide. Definitely the best guide out there for Iceland, highly recommended.

. Go Slow England
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: Alastair Sawday
March 06, 2008
This is just the sort of guidebook I've been waiting for. Packed full of places to stay and places to visit, inspired by 'good food and artisan producers.... craftmanship and community, landscape and history'. The book is divided into geographical regions with useful maps so that you can plan your time (or dip in and out as you wish). As with all Sawday guides, the places reviewed have a thorough write up. Stunning photos are sprinkled through the book..... A book to curl up with and plan your slow adventures. Just gorgeous!

. London: From Punk to Blair
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
from: Reaktion Books

Without a doubt this book is something that I've been waiting to read for a long time! it is a collection of narratives and photographs from the period 1977 to the present. This book also gives a clear account of how London has changed from being a depressed, run-down and politically charged city to the cosmopolitan and modern city it has become today. After reading this book it has surprised me just how much London has changed from the run down Docklands of the 1980's and the riots in Brixton to the crumbling inner-cities that were once common place. This book is also good because it emphasizes that although many positive changes have taken place, they may not have necessarily affected all Londoners. 'London' also gives an account of the struggle of many ... Read More:

When my book came through the post and flicked through the pages, I actually started juming about and screaming!!! The pictures are so amazing. I was in so much excitement about the holiday I am going on this summer. I am going cycle touring in France, and this book is going to become my bible. Infact I was so impressed by it, I planned my whole route so that I could pick up as many campsites as possible. Trust me, the campsites are totally stunning, well thats if you think stunning is beautiful, rural, and peaceful campsites with breath taking views!

The Rough Guides rarely disappoint. They are thorough and interesting. My only complaint is that Murcia, as usual in guidebooks like this, just doesn't get the treatment it deserves. I always buy the most recent edition, but suggest you can probably skip an edition now and then!

. Bitter Lemons of Cyprus
City Travel Guides > Books > Europe
by: Lawrence Durrell
July 03, 2000
The first issue here is over the name of the book, It is NOT `Bitter Lemons of Cyprus'; it was published as `Bitter Lemons', and that title has far more contextual meaning. Lemons are bitter sweet, and that defines Durrell's relationship with Cyprus, his village, the villagers and indeed the UK, which he generally referred to as Pudding Island. I will declare an interest: I adore Cyprus; this book was a main reason for me to visit, and subsequently, some 20 years ago we bought an arty house in a beautiful village. We have spent eight years living amongst some of the most generous, open and warm-hearted people on earth. This rings out from Durrell's book too. His descriptions are precise, accurate, affectionate and objective. In parallel with his attempts ... Read More:
